I feel his intense stare on me even through the dimness of the car.

“I’ve seen pictures of you, of course,” he continues. “Yet they do you no justice. You are absolutely breathtaking.”

“Thank you.” A hint of shyness washes over me.

Maybe Elijah can break the chains of my obsession with Antonio.

His driver drives us to Obelix, my favorite restaurant in the city. Either Elijah chose it out of sheer luck, or my father provided him with that detail.

Bruno sits at the bar, drinking water, while our server escorts us to a secluded table away from the other diners.

Elijah is a gentleman.

A charmer.

But not Antonio charm.

More crooked-politician charming.

He’s handsome with a perfectly shaped nose, dimpled cheeks, and a tan, heart-shaped face. He speaks well, like a natural-born congressman who fell on the wrong side of the law.

And he’s wealthy with powerful connections. According to the info sheet my father provided, Elijah has great weapons connections and affiliations with three senators, a Supreme Court justice, and the head of the ATF.

The perfect package.

We order our food and talk for hours, like two old friends reconnecting. There isn’t one awkward silence between us. Time passes, and we finish two bottles of red wine.

I’ve made the right choice.

Elijah will make a great husband.

“I want to marry you, Gigi,” he says bluntly before we leave.

His statement makes my head dizzy.

Or maybe it’s the wine.

Probably both.

He runs his napkin along his lips. “I know you live in New York, and I’m not a fan of long-distance relationships, so I’ll purchase a home in New York. We can fly back and forth on my jet. Whatever you want in this life, Gigi, I will give you.”

I smile at him.

He grins. “A smile is good.”

My smile grows.

He pushes his hand into his black blazer and withdraws a black velvet box before sliding it toward me.

I wince.

Whoa. This is moving fast.

Please don’t drop down on one knee here.

He chuckles, as if reading my mind. “Don’t worry, this isn’t your wedding ring.” He opens the box, revealing a sparkling solitaire diamond on a band adorned with smaller diamonds. “It’s a promise ring.”

It isn’t promise-ring material.
