None of them steps up.
Understandable.
Cernach is a mean bastard, and I wouldn’t want him as a father-in-law.
When Cernach realizes no one is jumping to marry his daughter, he points at each of them, one by one. Damien is last, and his face clouds with annoyance when Cernach’s attention lingers on him longer.
“Damien,” Cernach says with full confidence. “You’re the type of man I desire my Riona to marry.”
Oh fuck.
Damien is the most controversial selection of them, and Cernach knows that.
In fact, it’s likely why he chose him. Cernach loves starting shit.
It’s also a smart choice for Cernach. Damien holds high rank and is smart as hell. People fear him.
Unfortunately for Damien, committing to marrying Riona is serious. He can’t bail on that decision later.
Cernach’s bulgy eyes are full of enticement as he waits for Damien to answer. “No contract, no guns.”
I shake my head.
Unlike my father, I won’t force this on my men.
“Sorry, Cernach—” I start but am interrupted by Damien stepping to my side.
His gaze is cold as he stares at Cernach. “I’ll do it.”
I hold up my hand. “Damien?—”
“I’ll do it,” Damien grits out.
"Excellent.” Cernach snaps his fingers in the air.
One of his men hands him a document, and Cernach drops it next to the guns.
He draws a pen from his coat and taps it against the papers. “I need both of your signatures here, and the deal is done. You can take your weapons and leave.”
“You’ll also continue providing us with firearms.” Damien jerks his head toward the paper. “I want that in writing.”
“And going forward, you only charge us half,” I add. “Damien is a capo. He’s worth it.”
Damien’s forehead is sweaty when he grabs the pen, reads over the papers, and scribbles his name. He holds it out to me.
“You sure?” I ask under my breath while taking it from him.
“If this is what it takes to get rid of Sonny, then that’s what I have to do.”
I lower my voice. “You know who Riona is, right?”
He straightens his collar and fails to meet my eyes. “I know exactly who Riona Koglin is.”
Damien signing the agreement will save the Lombardi throne.
Pippa will never forgive him for marrying her cousin though.
No one has said a word since we got in the car after our meeting with Cernach. Julian and Emilio are both aware how big of a deal Damien marrying Riona is.
