Let the mayhem begin.

44

Everything happens so fast.

Antonio squeezes the trigger, and I swear, I hear the whiz of the bullet as it comes toward us. Billy shoves Sonny aside, causing the bullet to only strike his arm.

Ugh.

I so wanted it to blow his head apart.

Jesus. I sound too much like the men around me.

Sonny howls in pain when he’s shot again in the leg. Billy throws me aside, skillfully tosses Sonny over his shoulder, and runs to the back door.

“Get him!” I attempt to scream through the tape.

I also try to point, but the restraints are making it too difficult.

My ears ring as gunfire reverberates through the house.

But it’s not only Antonio firing off his weapon. More men have joined, but I don’t take my eyes off Antonio. He starts following Billy, but jolts backward. When he holds out his arm to run a hand over it, his palm is covered in blood.

I struggle to break free of the zip ties, freaking out more than him, desperate to help him. He wipes the blood on his pants as if it were spilled juice and flees in the path Billy disappeared.

My heart thuds when someone sneaks up and captures me from behind—again.

Jesus. I need a camera on the damn back of my head.

I attempt to fight them off, but they’re stronger.

“Gigi, it’s me, Luca,” a male says as he carries me to the side, hidden from others, while shielding me with his body.

I gasp for deep breaths when he rips the tape off my mouth.

“Sonny!” I rub at the stickiness on my lips. “He went outside. You need to find him!”

“My job is to protect you.” Luca shakes his head. “Your father and Benny will handle him.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, and dizziness and nausea crash through me.

My father and Benny are here.

Now that they’ve found me, they’ll want to kill Antonio.

My father won’t sleep until he marks both men off his kill list.

When the gunfire stops, Marsha crawls out of her hiding space and straightens herself. I jump when a bullet coming out of nowhere hits her. She violently falls back against a bookshelf, knocking items off. Turning my head, I search for the shooter.

My father stands a few feet away with his pistol aimed in that direction. When blood pools from her forehead, he lowers his gun. Luca helps me to my feet and cuts off the ties on my wrist with a pocketknife.

When my father sees me, he rushes in my direction, yanking me into the tightest hug we’ve ever shared. His hug feels safe …like home.

“Giana,” he says into my hair, running his hands down it. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I reply, squeezing him.

He steps backward, settling his hands on my arms, and I realize I’m shaking. Benny comes forward to hug me next.
