And I love him.

It’d only make the situation worse though.

“He forced you to marry him, goddammit,” he roars before shooting me a questioning glance. “Did he do anything beyond that?”

Did he rape you?

That’s what he wants to know.

I wince again. “He only married me to hurt you.”

“No, Antonio married you because he desires you. As much as I want to believe it’s because we’re at war with him, it’s not. He wants you as his wife, and it seems he’ll go to great lengths to achieve that.” His voice softens to land whatever blow is coming my way. “That’s why I have to kill him, Gigi.”

“Dad, please.” My voice breaks at the end.

“If I don’t kill him, Sonny will. He’s at war with two powerful men. Two against one. He’s outnumbered.” He leans back and crosses his arms. “Until then, you won’t leave the mansion.”

“Oh, so now, I’m a prisoner here?”

“This isyour home. You’re never a prisoner in your home.”

“What about your promise to Mom?” I wipe a tear off my face. “You swore to her you’d let me choose my husband. What if I choose Antonio?”

“I made your mother many promises.” He starts counting them on his fingers. “I won’t select your spouse. I’ll allow you to attend the high school she attended. And I’ll always keep you alive. The last one is the most important. I will break any others to ensure the third happens.”

“What if you teamed up? Killed Sonny together?”

He shakes his head. “His father ordered a hit on your brother and shot Neomi, among other things. We’ll never have an alliance with a Lombardi again. I’ll have your uncle Santos draw up annulment papers.”

I pull myself to my feet and turn to leave the room when he says, “Oh, and your little burner? I have it now, so don’t waste your time looking for it.”

I whip around to face him. “I’m a grown woman. You can’t make these decisions for me.”

His pulse throbs in his neck as he strokes his jaw. “Then right now, consider me your keeper, just like Antonio.” He raises a brow. “You seemed to understand him abducting you. Give me that same respect.”

I place a hand over my chest. “You’re breaking my heart.”

His voice turns quiet and even. “I’m sorry, Gigi. If that’s what needs to happen to keep it beating, so be it.”

If one thing can comfort some of the sadness inside me, it’s finally meeting my baby brother.

At no point am I biased when I say Enzo Fredrick Marchetti is the cutest baby to ever exist. I can’t wait to be the best big sister ever. He’d better get ready for all the kisses, gifts, and cuddles.

I play with his tiny hand in mine while cradling him. Even though I desperately wanted to meet him last night, I wasn’t mentally there. Enzo needs calmness around him. I won’t exactly consider myselfcalmnow, but it’s improved.

Well, correction: I’m doing a better job at faking it.

Natalia sits next to me, and we laugh when Enzo releases a tiny burp. Seeing her as a mother fills my heart with so much warmth. She’s absolutely glowing. Just for an instant—and I hate myself for it—a twinge of jealousy hits me.

I’ll never have this.

Gigi Marchetti—forever the aunt, the sister, the daughter.

Never the wife or mother.

Earlier, when my father brought Enzo down, my anger toward him briefly faded. He resembled a completely different man from last night.

There was a softness, a relaxation while he held Enzo.
