He scrubs a hand over his mouth. “We’re keeping it hush-hush for now, so don’t tell anyone.”

I cross my heart, and he tips his head forward in appreciation.

“I never ask you for anything,” I tell him. “But please, do this one thing for me.”

“We’re going to kill him, Gigi. Find another favor.”

“Antonio risked his life for me. His mother’s life. It’s only fair that I do the same.”

He sighs, rests his glass on a coaster on the end table, and stands. “Be right back.”

I sip on my drink, and when he returns, he’s holding documents and a pen.

He drops the papers on the coffee table, clicks the pen open, and sets it on top. “Marriage annulment papers. Sign them.” He taps his foot on the floor, making himself more annoying than I thought possible.

My face burns as I glare at the papers and cross my arms. “I’m not signing.”

“Give it up, Gigi. He’s on the kill list of many men. Why would you want to be his wife?”

I stare at him, waiting until our eye contact is strong. “Because I love him, Benny.”

His dark gaze drifts from annoyance to understanding.

To pity.

Few people can drag compassion out of Benny, and right now, I’m one of them.

For a moment, he becomes a loving brother.

Not a cruel mobster.

I blink away tears.

He snatches his tumbler and drains his drink. “Love doesn’t solve problems or end wars, Gigi. In fact, most of the time, it causes them.”

As I tilt my head back, his words sink in deeper, and he settles himself on the edge of the couch, pulling me in for a hug.

“I’m sorry, but you’ll move on from this,” he tells me. “You of all people know nothing is promised in this life.”

We separate when his phone rings, and I dab away tears as he fishes it from his pocket.

He listens to the person on the other line and clears his throat. “I’ll be there in fifteen. Make sure he doesn’t leave.” Ending the call, he looks at me. “I need to get to Seven Seconds. Your soon-to-be ex-husband is there, asking for us.”

The past twenty-four hours have been hectic.

We chartered a private flight for Amara and Clara to Italy. They’re out of the city and safe. I should’ve done that when this war started and sent Gigi there along with them.

Even though I begged them, Eden and Dante refused to leave with them, hell-bent on helping me kill Sonny.

And thank God they did.

Eden made some phone calls and learned Sonny frequents the brothel she used to work in and has a favorite escort, Candy. She and Eden are friends, and she connected me with Candy.

Candy agreed to set up a night with Sonny in exchange for a hundred grand and help leaving the brothel. Once Sonny dies, she’ll be under our protection.

There’s still the possibility Candy is setting me up.
