Damien nods, understanding their silence as if it’s their form of communication.

Just as I’m about to kick them out since I don’t have time for relationship drama, Damien says, “Let me walk you out.”

Pippa inhales a deep breath and silently walks with Damien to her silver Audi.

Damien helps her into the car and then joins me in the doorway.

“You good?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “I want someone keeping an eye on her when she comes and goes from here.”

“Done.”

When Pippa reaches the gate, he dashes to his Mercedes, jumps inside, and follows her.

I walk inside at the same time my phone rings. “Yeah?”

“We have a Vinny problem,” Sonny says on the other end. “Meet me at the casino immediately.”

One day.

I want just one day when I don’t have to deal with Vinny’s bullshit.

Hell, I’ll settle for an hour at this point.

The stress of this life will have me in my grave before forty.

Only thirteen years to go.

A headache presses into my skull as I enter the back entrance of Lucky Kings. I want to kick everyone out at the sound of slot machines firing off and people cheering.

“Your brother is out of fucking control,” Sonny yells as soon as I walk into my father’s office. “Out of fucking control!” He swings his arms up, nearly knocking down a photo of my father with New York’s governor.

Did the fucker drag me here to waste my time and tell me the obvious?

I ignore Sonny and look at my father. He has one hand on his desk and the other on his cane. His face is void of emotion.

“There was a failed hit on the Marchettis,” he explains.

“A failed hitby your brother,” Sonny adds like I can’t put two and fucking two together.

There’s a certain irony in how closely Vinny’s and my situation mirrors my father's and Sonny’s. He isn’t as impulsive as Vinny, but Sonny prioritizes his personal interest over the family’s welfare.

“Tell me what happened,” I say.

“Vinny got word that Cristian, Natalia, and other Marchetti members were at L’ultima Cena,” my father starts. “When theyleft, your brother and his minions drove by and greeted them with gunfire.”

“Where is he now?” My body pulses with anger.

“We’re unsure,” my father replies. “He isn’t answering his phone.”

“He knows he failed.” Sonny thrusts his chest forward.

“Was anyone hurt?” I rub my forehead.

“Only Dino.” My father tightens his hold on the cane before lowering himself into the leather chair. “But that motherfucker will probably brush it off.”

Dino isn’t only one of Cristian’s highest capos. He’s also his brother-in-law. Which means if his wife likes him, she’ll push Cristian for revenge further.
