Cristian could’ve gotten rid of Natalia after killing Vinny.

He cares about Natalia more than we thought.

Fuck me again.

“Cristian won’t hand her over.” I flick a penny on the table and watch it spin. “He cares about her.”

Snubbing out his cigarette in a full ashtray, Sonny huffs in the chair beside me. “Does that bitch have a golden cunt?”

“She’s his weakness. His vulnerability.” My father smirks across from me. “We use that against him.”

“We use the bitch and Cristian’s daughter.” Sonny lights another cigarette. “That’s how we hit Cristian where it hurts. He needs to suffer the pain of losing them before we end his life.”

I down a shot of gin and pour another one.

My father shakes his head. “No. We need to kill Benny first.”

Using my glass, I gesture toward him. “We go for Benny and Natalia.”

Sonny shoots me a suspicious look. “Not the daughter?”

“We kill Natalia first since she’s the reason Vinny is dead. Benny is the next to go. We finish with Cristian. Let the Marchetti empire fall to the useless daughter. She’ll let it crumble, and then we’ll take everything she has and kill her.”

I told Gigi to stay in Italy to protect her. No one knows where her aunt lives, and I intend to keep it that way. If it comes downto Natalia and Gigi, sorry, Natalia. The girl has become quite the fucking headache anyway.

“Welcome to war, gentlemen,” my father announces to the men in the room, rubbing his palms together in excitement.

He’s ready for his revenge.

Everyone nods.

Myself included.

Loneliness.

Confusion.

Heartache.

Those emotions reside in my stomach when I return to New York. The usual excitement I feel from being home isn’t there.

When Natalia and Luca pick Bruno and me up from the airport, I hug her tight, grateful she’s safe.

We go to lunch and then the bridal shop, where I find the perfect bridesmaid dress. I help Natalia with hers—an A-line gown with a scoop neckline. It’s simple, how Natalia prefers, and she looks beautiful in it.

My mind is flooded with countless questions about her and my father.

Him marrying her because Vinny wanted to slice and dice her is understandable, but why not end the engagement now that he’s dead?

It’s because the Lombardis still want her dead, right?

Because Vincent wants to kill Natalia in revenge for Vinny’s death.

I try to tell myself those are the reasons they’re still marrying. Not that they actually like each other. No way is my best friendin love with my father. And it’s not like my father is capable of loving anyone not blood-related.

Natalia and I hang out for the day, and I don’t see my father until dinner. That’s when I learn their relationship isn’t just a facade to spare her life. In their engagement role-playing, they fell for each other. My best friend will be my stepmother.
