War.

Not only with the Marchettis, but with me as well.

A civil war.

A war between rivals.

I need to be ready.

It was only a matter of time before someone leaked my father’s room number. The Marchettis have better connections than us. They also have the Severinos, who are just as resourceful as them.

We’re so fucked, and I’m on my own.

While sitting in the dark room, I feel so fucking lost and hardly notice the movie playing in the background. My attention shifts to the door when it creeps open.

I crack my neck.

Do motherfuckers think I’m as stupid as my brother?

I flip on the lamp next to me, shift in my seat, and find Benny standing in the doorway. He doesn’t look guilty or taken aback by my catching him.

“I figured you’d come roaming in here like the vermin you are,” I snarl.

This is exactly why I refused to leave my father’s bedside. Our brains think too much alike because I’d do the same thing if I were in Benny’s shoes.

“My guess is, you’re not here for a welfare check,” I continue. “What was your plan? Come in here and kill him?” I scoff, shaking my head. “Did you not consider that they’d check the cameras and see you?”

“My men are good at erasing camera footage,” Benny replies.

I scoff again.

“But since I don’t like witnesses, I’ll have to also kill you. What was it I heard he said?” He drums his finger against his chin. “A son for a son? Me for Vinny.”

Of course he heard what my father had said. The only person who would’ve leaked that is Sonny’s traitorous ass. He wants the Marchettis to kill me, so he doesn’t look like he has my blood on his hands and can easily become don.

“My father is dying, Benny,” I tell him, nearly out of patience with this conversation.

With this life.

With this bullshit.

“Do me a favor and allow him to pass in peace,” I add.

“No.” He pauses for a moment before adding, “Men who call hits on other men don’t deserve favors.”

“I didn’t know about the hit.” I rise to my feet, too tired for this bullshit yet knowing this is just the start of the war I’ll soon be facing. “Had I known about it, I’d have advised him against it, as I’ve done several times since your father killed Vinny. Whenever he wanted to strike, I talked sense into him.”

He levels his stare on me. “What happened this time, then?”

“My father has struggled with health issues for the past two months, and his decision-making has been limited. Yesterday wasn’t his first stroke, but it’ll be his last. We will place him in hospice until he goes.”

Telling Benny this is risky.

What do I have to lose at this point though?

“Good.” Benny smirks. “It’s time he rots.”

I wince, my muscles tensing, as we stand only a few feet away from each other. “I don’t believe my father would’ve okayed the hit if he had been in his right state of mind.”
