Surge didn’t care much for technology, not unless it involved sawing into bone, and Frankie was more than likely hunkereddown underground with a goddamn bushel of apples—don’t bother asking because I didn’t know the answer to that one.

I was sure at least one of the fuckers was still watching me. No one roamed freely in the compound, not unless they were being chased. And right now, I was doing the chasing.

Two seconds and one eerie creak of a door later, and Ghostface himself stepped into view. His arms crossed over his chest like a disapproving father figure and his lips pursed into a fine line.

He wasn’t happy. Which was just peachy fucking keen. Because I wasn’t either.

“It’s the middle of the night, sweetheart. Why all the yellin’?”

“Please, like any of you fuckers actually sleep,” I grunted, and he quirked a brow, waiting for me to answer his question. “Right, well, I’m gonna need you to put your money where your mouth is and fuck me, Cas,” I told him matter-of-factly. And I couldn’t deny how much I liked unnerving a man who was known for maintaining his composure.

“And why’s that, Danica? That dick not as good as you thought it was? Or did you just finally come to your senses?”

“Where’s your bunk these days? Or you wanna just press me up against the closest wall? I’m not picky.”

“Clearly…” he grunted, and I wasn’t sure if that was meant to be a dig at me or Connor.

“Need me to help you get it up first? Is that the problem?” I reached out a hand towards Casper’s zipper and he slapped it away.

“Ain’t no problem with me or my dick. The problem’s with you.” He stalked forward until my back was forced against the closest surface. “I don’t like my women willing, sweetheart. I like 'em kicking and screaming and fighting as I hold 'em down with a palm and fuck 'em into submission. Think you can do that? Or those balls of yours not as big as you like to believe they are?”He grinned, and the way his lips curled slung that familiar shiver up my spine. The kind that sent my central nervous system into overdrive as my body tried to decide between fight or flight.

When Casper snatched my wrists, one in each hand, fightwon out as a knee shot up between his legs. He turned his hip, keeping me from making contact before he pressed his nose into my hair and took a deep breath.

“Do you know what fear smells like, Dani?” He didn’t wait for a response; he didn’t want one. “It smells like sweat, sounds like a heart beating out of your chest, and tastes like tears—salty and sinful—all rolled up in one.”

Fuck. Me.That girl was quick. And I was bleeding, bogged down by the arm clutched to my abdomen and the trail of bodily fluids leaking behind me.

It was my fault. I’d spooked her. Come on a little too strong for her to handle. Don’t get me wrong, Dani was a force to be reckoned with. As long as it didn’t involve anything emotional. Because that shit was baby girl’s Achilles’ heel.

By the time I rounded the corner, following the sound of her irritated stomping, my heart was jumping in my throat and a couple of torn stitches turned to several as I rushed the fucker who had her wrists in one hand and his cock in the other. Didn’t matter if she went looking for trouble or not, she’d found it and I’d found her.

I lunged forward and tackled the son of a bitch to the ground, landing one good blow to his jaw before he could stop me. Then it was game on as he smirked up at me between a set of bloodied teeth.

“You’re dead and you don’t even know it.” He laughed. His arms thrown up and his palms tucked under his head as his eyes flicked from me to Dani. Just as quickly as the grin appeared, itwas gone when he pinned me with a glare. “She begged me for it, in case you’re wondering. Go on and ask her. Ain’t my fault if a little mouse stumbles into my trap, then suddenly changes her mind about wanting to play the game. That’s not how the world works, sweetheart.” It was clear the last part was meant for Dani as the bastard’s scowl landed on her this time.

“Guess your mama never taught you no means no,” I spit in reply.

“Nah, because the woman knew her place was to service with the rest of 'em.” He tossed his head back on a cackle as I slowly pushed to my feet, stumbled over to Dani, and grabbed her hand.

“We’re getting the fuck out of here.”

For once, she didn’t argue with me as I dragged her back down the hallway, stopping by our room to grab our duffle bag and slinging it over my shoulder. I made two wrong turns before landing us in the same cavernous foyer where this shitshow all started.

“I’m driving,” I grunted, half in annoyance and half in pain, as I guided her out the front door and jumped behind the wheel.

She stood silent for a minute, leaning a palm on the passenger side window without actually making a move to get in. I didn’t have the energy to fight her on this but I would if I had to. 'Cause one thing was for certain. We’d spend the night locked in this car before stepping foot in that madhouse again.

I started counting to ten in my head. By the time I got to eight, the car door was opening and she was positioning herself on the blood-stained seat. I’d almost forgotten the crime scene I’d left behind less than twenty-four hours ago. The interior smelled musky, metallic, rotten. But it sure beat whatever bullshit was going on a few feet away.

I turned the car around, continuing down the bumpy path of the hidden driveway as trees blurred by on each side of us. It wasonly a few hours till daylight, but I’d drive through the goddamn night if I had to. I was too ramped up to sleep at this point anyway. An irrational rage boiled beneath my surface, causing my blood pressure to spike and my jaw muscles to tighten. I wasn’t an angry guy. Didn’t really lose my temper. Right now I was fucking furious and I couldn’t tell you if it was at the Joker we left cackling to himself on the floor, the eerily tight-lipped woman to my right, or worst of all… myself.

So much adrenaline was pumping through my system, I didn’t even feel the pain anymore. Barely acknowledged the dampness of my own blood still seeping through my shirt. Or the feel of my foot pressing a little too hard on the accelerator. Not until Dani’s hand was covering mine on the wheel.

“Ya need to slow the fuck down, Connor. Unless your goal is to get us pulled over in a car that looks like something out of Forensics Digest.” Dani’s tone was softer than it’d usually be. Especially considering she wasn’t the one in control at the moment. “And I’ll need to close those stitches you popped. Surge threw in a few sub-Qs, so your intestines shouldn’t be falling out anytime soon. But if we don’t close the top layer, you’ll be down with infection before you get the chance to properly reprimand me like I know you’re dyin’ to do.”

That last part had me side-eyeing her as my foot eased up on the gas just slightly. “I’m not gonna reprimand you, Dani. I’m not your father,” I snapped.
