I kiss him. “He’s nothing. A blip.” I take a breath and trace the shape of his mouth. “When Fallon found me, he must have worked hard because I had another name. But he gave me a home and family. Made me get a real education. And I didn’t let anyone get close to a naked me for a few years because I was done. I wanted to concentrate on me. And when you came along, you were such a pain in my ass that everything went haywire, and what else could I do but fall in love with you. I mean, I hated you because you were a bossy jerk. But I saw more.”

“Karlee.”

“Tizio.” I shake my head. “No one but me gets to decide who I do and don’t sleep with. Because that’s one decision I made as a kid. My terms. No one would ever control me in that way. So, when I say I love you, I do. And when I say Fallon has no say, he doesn’t. Just me. Sex is sex. Except with you. Then it’s . . .”

I stop, trying to think of the right words. “It’s mind-blowing, and whatever we do, I want. We do fit. In all the ways.”

He clears his throat. “Just so we’re clear, you’re free to go. You’re no longer in danger.”

“Did you hear a word I said?” I hit him again. “Because if I don’t want to go?”

“Never said you had to or I wanted you to. But you do what you want and—” I hit him again in the chest, harder this time. “Ow.”

“You’re not good at this, Tizio. Everyone knows you can’t profess undying love?—”

“I never said undying.”

“Prick! Everyone knows you can’t wordlessly profess undying love for a girl and then say there’s the door.”

“I think you just twisted a whole lot of things.”

“Explain.”

“I want you to do what you want to do.”

“Good,” I say. “Because I want you and want to do you. That’s a double prize, right there.”

He laughs.

“Karlee?”

“Yes?”

“I fucking love you. It’s pretty much undying though I’m not fucking sure how that works.”

“No romance in your soul,” I whisper, the happiness sweeping me in euphoric waves. “My love for you is undying too.”

“Do you think you can manage traditional long enough to get married? I want the world to know you’re mine.”

I look at the ceiling and pretend to think about it, and then I look at him. “As long as we can tell everyone we’re living in sin.”

Tizio kisses me. “Deal.”

I wiggle on him, and I can feel him grow and swell inside me. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. “Again?”

“Yeah.”

“Good.” I kiss him and start to move on him. “Forever, Tizio?”

“Forever, sweet Karlee. Forever.”
