Thiscannotbe happening.

“Let him go,” I say. “Now!”

Tizio ignores me as he leans deeper into Hazard’s space. “So, I’ll repeat myself again, just in case you’re slow on the uptake. Karlee’s off your radar. Completely. Got it?”

“Yeah, man,” Hazard croaks, eyes wide. I swear they might pop out of their sockets.

“Let him go,” I shout, moving closer, glaring at Tizio.

Tizio looks at me right as he releases Hazard, who stumbles and almost falls to eat pavement. Only his knees and hands keep him from doing a face-plant into the sidewalk.

“You.” Tizio points a finger at me, those dark eyes of his like molten lava. “Shut the fuck up.”

Hazard staggers to his feet, takes me and the crowd in, and tries to pull Tizio to face him. The big man turns, and Hazard swings his fist at Tizio’s face.

My brother’s friend blocks the punch, grips Hazard’s fist, and crushes and wrenches it. He twists his arm behind Hazard’s back right as Tizio spins him to plaster him face-first against the wall.

“Just fucking take the loss like a man,” Tizio remarks with a warning tone that can’t be missed.

“Asshole,” I mutter, rolling my eyes as Tizio looks in my direction. “You, not Haz.”

And girls standing around sigh. They actuallysighas the big, tall man does all this without seemingly making any kind of effort.

“You’re a maniac,” says Hazard, shifts his gaze to me. “And so are you, bitch.”

Tizio smacks his head hard into the wall. “Not a nice way to talk to a lady.”

The group surrounding us is a mix of sighs and poisoned daggers aimed at me.

I’m furious. Humiliated. I want to get eaten up by a passing dinosaur. All because of my brother’s friend ruining everything.

I turn, ready to walk away, when my tormentor lets go of my ex-date. I can’t help but go still as I take the way he shoots a glare at everyone crowded around. “That warning goes for all of you, too. Karlee’s off limits.” Then he jerks his head to the oppositeside of the street, eyes locked on me. “And you? We’re going. Now.”

Because there’s nothing I can do or say to stop him physically removing me, and because there is no way I want to remain here, I flounce off across the road to his car, Tizio right behind me.

He opens the door, shoves me in, and then gets in the driver’s side.

The silence stretches and grows, and I tap my fingers against the door.

“Stop that.”

“Or what?” I ask, barely making an effort to keep the anger from my voice.

“Don’t fucking think you’re too big to put over my knee and spank that sweet ass of yours.”

I turn and his hand’s on the ignition, eyes on me, or should I say my breasts, and somehow, I resist the urge to either pull up or pull down the top I’m wearing. “Pervert.”

Tizio starts the car and drives back to my prison. “You snuck out?—”

“You won’t let me do anything.” I pout.

“Because you don’t deserve to do a thing. You don’t understand rules.”

“In case you haven’t noticed,” I say, smoothing down the edges of my skirt, “I’m twenty-two, not two. And I don’t need rules.”

His soft laughter winds around me making me shiver from its compelling lack of humor. “Fallon had bodyguards on you, he had rules. He seems to think you need protection from something or someone, like your little friend from the other day. Or some other stalker you’ve gone and pissed off. The point is, Fallon thinks you need protecting. I’m here to make that happen.”

“No. You’re here to make my life hell.” I shoot a glare at him. “Are you mad I broke out of your little fortress? That I beat the system?”
