Page 3 of Searing Passion

Fallon breathes out. “This one’s angry about something, started fights with her, followed her. I have a source, but they’re not you, Tizio. She needs you. Please.”

“You don’t trust these guys for what they might do. You’re worried about them getting the information she may or may not have?” I pause and play with the please in my head. “Or someone else?”

He looks me in the eye. “All the above. I don’t want her hurt, you know? She’s innocent in all this.”

And with that, I know his little sister is in trouble.

But I don’t fuckingknowapart from the base level of his meaning of trouble.

He’s done something, involved in something, and his sister might bear the brunt of that.

Maybe these college kids are part of it, separate or just his red fucking herring to any ears paying attention beyond me. It doesn’t matter apart from the base truth.

His sister needs protection. I more than get that.

But a little more information would help.

“Fuck, Fallon. This is bullshit. You need to give me something. Anything.”

He leans back in his seat, dropping his hands to his thighs. “Told you everything. I can’t do everything from here, so . . .”

Oh, fuck. “Does she know?”

“I’ve been out of town on a job for a while.”

“Dude.” I tap a knuckle on the bench to make him look at me. “You’re in here for more than the fucking weekend. You need to tell her.”

“Yeah, I will.”

“I’ll help, protect her, put her up in a place near mine, or if I have to, move her into the spare room. But you have to tell her.”

A muscle works in his jaw. “I know. She’s just . . . she’s been through a lot, Tizio.”

“Bullshit.”

He eyes me like he’s looking at his biggest enemy, who’s annoyed the fuck out of him.

“Explain my reasons here, ya know, if she asks why I’m suddenly showing up.”

Fallon sighs because I just smile and hold his gaze. “Your reasons are she’s being harassed, and I asked you to help.”

“Obviously.”

“Karlee’s fucking smart, man. Like scary smart at times. So, I need to be careful. I need her to think I’m away with work, like I told her, and she knows I’m overprotective, so it makes sense to send someone in to take over.”

I narrow my eyes. “I’m not a fucking surrogate brother, Fallon.”

“It’ll irritate her so much she’ll be preoccupied and won’t ask as many questions. Because she’s also naïve for a kid who lived her life.”

“And she’s gonna just believe me?”

“She knows when I’m away, I have people check up on her. So yeah.” He leans forward. “Karlee’s got an attitude that can bring down an army, but she’s not as vulnerable as she thinks. I need you to keep her safe.”

“Fine, I’ll do it.”

“This isn’t a Scorsese film,” I mutter to Diego, who’s lying on the hood of my car.

Nicolo looks up from the SUV he’s standing outside of, and they exchange a look.
