It’s not a cool evening, and he was wearing a jacket.

“Go and get the bastard.”

“Long gone.”

She sniffs, and the tremble in her hand as she grips the side of my shirt gives her away. It’s the only thing. “You don’t take your job seriously. Either that, or you want me so much you can’t bear to leave my side.”

“Damn, Karlee, you hit that nail head-on.” I send a message to Wendy to meet us at the house.

“H-he said to give it up, but I don’t know what he meant. He made it sound like I had something. I scratched him, though. Right in the face.”

“Good girl.”

“Woman.” She pauses. “What did he mean?”

Shit. Fucking Fallon’s put me in a spot. He doesn’t want his sister knowing he’s in prison, but it’s going to come out sooner rather than later. But not yet. For now, I’ll keep holding up that promise.

“It’s to do with your brother.”

She eyes me steadily as I slide an arm around her and take her bag. Slowly, we walk to the car. “And you’re not going to tell me.”

“I’m not telling you because I don’t fucking know. Fallon’s a cagey fucker when he wants to be.”

“You’re all assholes.”

“Karlee, what did he feel like, the guy who grabbed you?”

“Like a roughhousing bully.”

I smile as we reach the car, and I open the passenger door. Then I get in and pull out onto the road. “I mean physically?”

“Strong, but . . . I don’t know, squishy? Like he was padded up.”

“Makes sense. He had skinny legs. What about those two guys?”

“They’re dicks, not murderers.”

“No one’s being murdered.” Yet. “And people surprise you.”

She has her shirt up, pressing it to her throat, and it’s hard work not to look at that smooth, flat belly she exposes. Her skin is the kind of silk I want to touch.

Swallowing hard, I avert my gaze right back to where it should be, on the road. Home can’t come soon enough.

I don’t waste time in getting the fuck back on the road. Diego and Nicolo are back, and I have to go to the De Luca compound to go over what went on in Arizona. I know Christian and Leo will have some words for me too. Thank fuck it’s not the trio. Theo’s busy with his and Blake’s newest arrival.

I don’t have time to change into a suit, but I pull on a black sweater I have in the small case I keep in the back seat just for a spare tie or T-shirt or sweater. It comes in handy more often than one might fucking think.

Then, I check my credentials and business cards. I exit as Tizio Manolo, security expert and bodyguard, and head to the offices.

It doesn’t take me long to get what I want. I’ve been doing this shit for a long time. It’s part charm, part the right words, and the rest is the right credentials. But I get access to the footage outside the building where Karlee was attacked.

Or I should have access.

Because it isn’t there.

It cuts from her stepping out to me and her walking from view.

“Someone in here?”
