She goes.

No sleep for the fucking wicked and morally bankrupt, so I’m not in the best of moods the next morning when I get off my treadmill. I prefer to hit the gym and the pavement, but I can work out at home too. I’m not leaving her here alone in the morning, no matter that I defiled her last night.

One time. Not happening again.

If I say that enough, I’ll believe it.

She barely talks the next morning, and I drop her off and transfer around the corner to one of the vans. Nicolo and Diego are there, and we’re digging into things. If they note my lack of sleep showing, they don’t comment.

We work for a few hours.

“Oh, shit.”

“What?” I close the computer and shift closer to Diego.

He sighs. “Police report.”

I take one look, and I’m out of that van so fast I almost miss Nicolo’s, “Told you. Fifty bucks, bro.”

Assholes.

I switch on the tracker and find her in minutes. She’s near the library with the tattooed douche blocking her into a corner. I grab him by the collar and pick him up.

What I want is to throw the ass, but I don’t, I just drop him.

“Time to go, Karlee.”

Without waiting for an answer, I grab her arm and haul her past Harold and down toward the van.

“Can you let me go?”

“Not on your life.” I keep dragging her with me.

She tugs on her arm. “Tizio, people are looking.”

“I don’t care.”

“No, but I go to school here, you prick.”

“Two things. Some guy claiming to work for De Luca was arrested for doing shit they shouldn’t have been on Lowlanders’ territory. As in, cops were called. As in, he brought up De Luca and spouted shit against the Lowlanders by name. Put that with the guy who mentioned them to you? Not good.”

“So—”

“I said two things.” I keep going, heading past the lot to where I parked my car. “A girl from here’s gone missing. Never showed up at home.”

“That’s not on me.”

I stop and stare at her, hauling her up close. “I know that, Karlee. Can you just fucking be normal for once?”

“Fuck me once and get to say I’m abnormal?”

This girl . . .

“No. Not it at all. But I take this as you being in real danger. So, everything you do,” I say, “goes by me now, and if I say no, you don’t do it. Understand?”
