“Is this your way of trying to hint they’re outside? Because they’re not. At all. No one is but my men.”

“I’m just telling you what you need to know. I’m telling you, I don’t know anything other than the basics. And that’s watch, approach, and if that fails, wait and go for retrieval.

I exchange another look with Nicolo, and he puts the tools down.

“One more thing, the girls?”

Her gaze shifts, and there’s a twitch. “We have nothing to do with that.”

With that, I think I have a link. It’s time to talk to Christian, and fill him in on some of this.

“Can we go?”

“No. Our boss is going to want words. Hang tight. I’m sure he’ll show. Eventually.”

“Is that all?”

Christian sounds pissed over speakerphone, but not as pissed as I first thought he would be.

“Yeah.”

“I asked you to?—”

“Tell you when it’s time, boss,” I say. “It’s time. But someone’s gunning to start a war so we all have to tread carefully.”

Christian laughs like I just told him a joke. I don’t think Christian’s walked carefully once in his life.

“Tizio is right,” Nicolo says. “I think we need to all be careful.”

“Fuck that. I’m not going to start a fucking war, but—” He stops. “Fine, I’ll go talk to them in a few hours, let them simmer, and then we’ll see where we’re at.”

He hangs up as Nicolo swings into the college parking lot. “Odds he won’t burn it all to the ground?” I ask.

“Oh, fifty-fifty.”

When we reach the art room, Karlee’s both mortified and miserable. The idiot teacher’s scared into keeping a distance from her, and Diego seems to be having the time of his life. He’s standing, arms folded, eyes glued to Walker as he grills him. He’s asking about his . . . mom?

“Tizio!” Kaylee looks over like she both wants to kill me and for me to save her. “Make him stop.” She hurries up to me. “He’s my favorite teacher.”

Her whisper doesn’t exactly make me want to help stop the epic grilling.

But I do. “Diego, we need to roll.” I look at Karlee. “Get your things, class is done for now.”

“Tizio—”

“Now, Karlee.”

Muttering under her breath, she turns and packs up, not looking at any of the other students who stand openly gaping or at the teacher who wants the floor to take him down into hell.

“Good fuckin’ talk,” says Diego, mock-saluting the guy. “I’ll be in touch because we still haven’t drilled down into your sexual history. I’m curious if the rumors that you like to?—”

“Diego!” Karlee smacks him. He hooks an arm around her shoulders, leading her fuming, embarrassed ass out of the room.
