“Not my friend, just does some work for me.” Laura laughs low. “Not that he knows it’s me. Now, where is it? Or I’ll kill you.”

“I can’t think with the knife to my throat.” Karlee sounds weak and scared, but she’s not shaking. She looks stoic and calm, and she’s in so much fucking trouble.

My girl thinks she’s buying us time.

She thinks she’s doing me a fucking favor.

The only favor I need is a blowjob and her safe. I’ll even forgo the blowjob as long as she does what she’s told and stays fucking safe.

But this bitch with the knife will kill her. She’s El Cabeza. A relation, anyway. She’s young, violent, and the kind who gets off on playing games, on destroying lives because she’s never had to earn her fucking way.

She’ll kill Karlee just because she can.

The only trick I have is back at the compound.

Something she doesn’t know.

So, I train my gaze on her, ignore Karlee; otherwise, I’ll fall the fuck apart, and I point my gun at Laura. “Step the fuck away.Or you’ll never get this.” I pull a key from my pocket, flash it, and slide it back in.

“I’m not stupid. You aren’t going to give that to me.”

“You’re right. And I’m also not letting you go free. You hurt Karlee. You hurt a lot of people with your fucked up games. And my girl’s bleeding, so you don’t get to do anything at all.”

I raise my gun, aim, and pull the fucking trigger.

Chapter Twenty-Four

KARLEE

Laura falls to the ground. She’s not blasted back, she just falls, and the knife clatters.

She had a knife to my throat, and Tizio just . . . shot her. He didn’t even look at me.

Took her the fuck out.

I’m shaking. It’s a tremor that comes from the inside out as I stare at him.

I’m vaguely aware of Diego on his phone, Nicolo going to my fallen . . . friend . . . enemy, whatever she is. Was.

Only Tizio and I stand, unmoving, staring at each other.

His pale, amber eyes burn so bright and fierce, it’s a wonder I’m not on fire.

Diego’s talking now, so is Nicolo, who’s moving to one side of the path, Diego to the other, like a human blockade. I think Diego says something about clean-up crew, and Nicolo about handling anyone who comes along in the option three mode. Whatever that is.

I want to point out it’s the early hours of the morning, and no one’s here. The security guards are probably snoozing somewhere because no one came running when Laura dragged me around with a knife as I led her all over the place, talking about the drive, letting her know I’d found it and it was here, at school.

She had keys, like some creepy master janitor or something.

I’m thinking all this. Thinking about how the air is cool with a slight bite I might find refreshing if there wasn’t a body and I wasn’t bleeding. I’m thinking of the sky and how handsome Tizio is, and how he never even kissed me goodbye.

“Oh my God,” I say, the words coming on their own. “You shot her.”

“I’m fucking aware.”

I rub my side and my fingers are sticky from where she cut me earlier. It’s not deep, the blood’s coagulating, and I’m a little lightheaded with it all.

There’s my stupidity, or is that bravery to deal with?
