She starts to shake as she cries softly against my chest.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispers.

My jaw clenches tight as all the different emotions slam into me: hatred and anger toward the man who hurt her. Fury at the system that let her down.

A fierce need to shield her from anything and everything in the world that wants to hurt her from this moment on.

She has nothing to apologize for.

But he sure as fuck does.

“So now you know what I really am,” she blurts miserably, looking away as she hugs herself.

“Fumi—”

“Now you know. I’m…I’m…”

“Perfect,” I growl, cupping her face and leveling my eyes with hers. “What you are, Fumi, is fucking perfect…and fucking mine.”

She’s still shaking a little as I kiss her fiercely, bruising her lips with mine.

Holding her.

Being her rock.

Her everything.

I kiss her until our lips go numb. Then I hold her until she falls asleep in my arms.

Now I know: I don’t just have to beat Preston Hall.

…I have to fucking kill him.

GABRIEL

“Sir? Excuse me—sir!!”

I ignore the secretary that launches to her feet as I storm toward the double doors to the office.

“Sir, I’m going to have to call Security if you don’t—” Her eyes suddenly go wide when she recognizes me. “Mr. Black?”

“No need for Security.” I flash her my best winning smile. “I’m just here to drop out of the race, and I wanted to tell him in person.”

Her brows shoot up. “Oh! Well, let me just buzz the Governor?—”

“No need.”

I push past her, barge into the room, and kick the doors shut behind me. Preston Hall looks stunned as he glances up from his desk.

“Gabriel?” he blurts as I storm toward him. “What the hell are you?—”

He flinches when I slam a file folder down on the desk in front of him.

“You’re done, Preston. Out. You bow out of the race fucking today.” I tap the file folder on his desk with a finger.

He blinks as the room goes silent. “I’m sorry, what? Gabriel, you can’t just barge?—”
