“Pack a bag?” Is he crazy?

“Yes. An overnight bag. And stop worrying. Also, don’t be mad at me.”

“I’m not mad,” I argue.

“Whatever you are at me, please don’t. I promise to make it up to you.” He hugs me tight, and I just melt for a second.

He lets me go, pats my ass, and sends me on my way. “You can’t be mad or disappointed until you give me the hour I am owed.”

I throw my hands in the air. “Fine.” I turn back around. “Can you at least tell me what you have planned to clean this place up in an hour?” Because I know it can’t be done that quickly.

Waving me away, he shakes his head. “Don’t worry about that. Go do what I asked you to do.”

Without any real hope that he can pull off some magic act of cleaning up a mess of this proportion at all, I shove things into a bag for me and Aurora, then go back to find him sitting on his ass on the sofa.

I drop the bag on the floor, my hand balling up and coming to my waist. “You said you were taking care of this mess!”

“I am.” Getting up, he calls out, “Aurora, let’s go, sweetie.”

“Just where are we going, Apollo?” Before he can answer, I add, “And how is this place getting cleaned with us leaving?”

“My muse, I’ve got this. Come on. I have a car waiting outside for us.” Picking up the bag I dropped and taking Aurora by the hand, he leads the way, and I follow behind him, not feeling confident that the mess will ever get cleaned.

Shocked to find a child’s car seat in the backseat of the limo he must’ve hired, I am further shocked when Apollo buckles Aurora into it. “You bought a car seat?”

“I did.” He turns, offering his hand to me. “Here, let me help you in.”

Getting inside the lavish car, I can’t help but run my hands over the soft leather seats. Also, it smells so much better than the apartment I just walked out of. “This is nice.”

He slips in beside me.

We face our daughter who’s busy watching a tablet I didn’t even notice she had. “Um, where did she get that?”

He runs his arm along the back of the seat. “I got it for her. It’s kept her entertained.”

Nodding, I watch the scenery move by as we head out. My baby has been sick, so it’s not like there was much else he could have done to keep her entertained. “So, where are you taking us?”

“My hotel, of course. I have a team of cleaning professionals going to clean your apartment. I talked to the manager who lives on-site there. She was nice enough to recommend a cleaning service. She was watching over the place while we were gone. I didn’t have a key to the apartment, so I couldn’t lock the door when we left.”

“Sorry. I should’ve left the key with you.” I feel so bad I lost it on him. It really seems like he has handled everything. I’m just so freaking tired. “I’m sorry I overreacted.”

Smiling, he wraps his arm around me. “I understand. You were just worried. I get it. I really do. God knows I’m beginning to understand what comes with being a parent.”

Leaning my head on his shoulder, I have to admit that he’s made me feel tons better. “Thank you, Apollo.”

Leaning in close, he whispers in my ear, sending warm breath over my neck, “You used to call me babe.”

Smiling, I can see that he’s determined to upgrade our friendship status. And, for once, I’m not completely against the idea. “Babe.” Looking into his eyes, I know how easy it can be to get lost in this man.

“Thank you.” His lips press against mine for only a moment.

The kiss pulls me under his spell.

“Ew.” Aurora’s little voice brings us back to the moment.

We laugh into each other’s lips.

“Are you Daddy’s girlfriend now, Mommy?”
