I force a smile at her through the mirror. “Why don’t you tell me what you wanted to tell him?”

“I can’t.” She shakes her head, making her curls bounce all around her cute little face. “It’s about you, Mommy. I want to get you something.”

“Oh, well, don’t worry about that. I don’t need anything.” Pulling into the parking lot of the Chinese restaurant, I park near the front entrance. “We’re here. I hope you’re hungry.”

Helping her out of the car, I hold her hand as we go inside. Her mood lightens up as soon as she sees the coy fish in the pond. “Fishes!”

Letting her look at the fish as they swim around, I try to relax a bit so I can actually enjoy our little outing. “I like the orange ones.”

“Me too.” Looking back at me, she asks, “Can we have one, Mommy?”

“We can’t have a pond in our apartment. It’s against the rules.”

“Miss Grace has a puppy, so why can’t we have a fish?”

“We can have a fish. A little one. We just can’t have a pond full of them.”

Hopping up and down, she claps happily, her face beaming. “The fish can live in our bathtub!”

“And where would we bathe then, silly?” Taking her hand again, I lead her inside so we can eat. “You can see the fish when we’re done. Come on, I’m hungry.”

The food smells amazing. I just hope I can stomach it.

Aurora and I eat way too much, and neither of us feels like going to the movies once we’re done.

With her little hand on her full tummy, she sits back in her booster seat. “I think I need another nap, Mommy.”

“Me too.” Buckling her seatbelt, I close the door, then get into the driver’s seat. “The buffet was a bad idea. We ate way too much.”

“But it was all so good.”

I pull out of the parking space. “We’ll be okay after a little sleep. You’ll see. Heck, we might even wake up hungry. They say that about Chinese food, you know?”

“Say what?” She looks at me through the rearview mirror as I drive.

“That people get hungry about an hour after eating Chinese food.”

“I will never be hungry again,” she claims as she leans her head back against the seat.

As I look at her through the mirror, I notice a car driving very close behind us and adjust the mirror so I can see the car better.

I decide to change lanes, and the black car does the same.

It’s probably nothing, but I just stick to my lane and keep an eye on it.

I turn to get on the highway and notice the car does too.

Another car starts to overtake me, but as soon as it comes side by side with me, it maintains speed to keep up with me instead of overtaking me.

What the hell is going on?

Then I notice a car keeping up with me on the passage side too.

Shit. I’m penned in by the three cars.

Are they crazy? I press the gas to try to get away from them but have to take my foot out of the pedal when another car moves in front of me and blocks my exit.

Shit. Shit. Shit. What do I do?
