“No, I can spare her, but I think you should be speaking to her, right? Also, please call me Elijah. Sir makes me feel old.”

My dad smiled as he handed Rhett his credit card and put the chip and pin machine back on the counter.

With my interest piqued, I watched as he made his way over. My sexual attraction towards him instantly spiked once again.

“I’d like to take you out for a bite to eat, and maybe you could show me around. I want to talk to you about a few things.”

“I’m not sure,” I said. “I don’t wanna leave my dad in the lurch.”

My dad appeared from the office with the biggest grin, and my eyes turned to slits.

“Roman isn’t in, and I haven’t finished everything you asked me to do.”

I was almost pleading for him to need me, stuck with the ever-conflicting feelings of what my brain was telling me and what my body desired.

“I’m only going to work on one more car before heading to Dane’s to watch the game. Don’t worry, we’re closed tomorrow anyway, so Roman can do it Monday morning if there’s anything that still needs catching up on. You go enjoy yourself.”

The smile on his face didn’t soothe me, especially as he was aware of my feelings about seeing Rhett.

He kissed me on the cheek and whispered, “Hear the poor guy out. Remember what we talked about last night.”

Chapter 9

Serena

My mind went a mile a minute as I got into his car. Still not having spoken one word, Rhett put the car into gear, pulled out of the garage, and started to drive down the road.

“What is it that you’re so desperate to talk about?”

He looked over at me and started laughing a full-blown belly laugh.

“I’m a man that is never desperate. Eager—yes. Keen—I think we have established that. But desperate, I’m afraid, isn’t one of my many qualities. And secondly, where’s your spontaneity?”

Even though his tone was amused, it still bugged me that he hadn’t answered my question.

Looking over at him, I raised my brows.

“And you’re telling me you are the spontaneous type? I find that rather hard to believe.”

I watched as he quickly glanced at me, the corner of his mouth pulled up in a smiling smirk. That look confirmed my suspicions.

“Okay, I’ll grant you that usually, I have my schedule and generally stick to my routine. However, sometimes in life, I think it’s important to take a minute and acknowledge when something unexpected comes your way and see where it goes.”

There was a softness to his eyes I hadn’t seen before, and I knew there was a deeper meaning to the words he said. But I still wasn’t sure if he meant this pull that seemed evident between us or something else.

I didn’t understand him. One minute, he was the aloof and self-assured bachelor I expected him to be, and the next, approachable, and joking. Which one was he?

“I need to quickly drop something off at the hotel I’m staying at and?—”

“You’re staying around here?” I interrupted him.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“As I said, my trip was cut short, then as I was about to book my flight back, I got a call from your dad that my car was ready, so I decided to fly to Philadelphia instead and had planned to pick up my car and then drive it back to Manhattan. But my flight was delayed, and by the time I landed, that garage was closed, so I thought, as I needed to stay in a hotel, why not stay for the weekend? Get out of the city. Away from work, life—all of it.”

He looked away, but his facial expression seemed empty and almost a little sad.
