I knew what he was doing, trying to find any excuse to not go, and it wasn’t because he’d be staying at mine.

“Roman, you know you’re always welcome at mine. You’re my brother, and I love you. But if you don’t want to go, that’s fine. I’ll tell Rubs you’re busy, and then you can send her a card, and she’ll be happy.”

With a sigh of relief, he nodded.

“I’ll send her a bunch of calla lilies.”

I gave him a warm smile for remembering her favorite flowers and mentally rolled my eyes at why men always seemed to struggle with being honest and honest with themselves.

By the time everyone had left, it was seven. The air had slightly cooled, and I walked over to my car with my weekend bag in hand, giving my dad and Roman one last wave goodbye. Even though I got to see my family once a month, saying goodbye was always tricky, and the drive back always felt bittersweet.

Chapter 3

Rhett

It had been four days since I saw that fiery beauty in the garage. Four days of her being the desire of my dreams. Four days of not being able to focus. I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I couldn’t function properly. Every time my cell rang, for a split second, I plugged the hope that it was her calling to say my car was ready and that she was waiting with it at the garage for me, naked in the backseat.

Yes, like that was going to happen.

The past two days at work had dragged on. Walking down the street, I kept thinking I’d see her, only to turn and see nobody there. I needed to get a grip. Looking at the time on my computer, I had three minutes until my next meeting. If it was just any meeting, I’d get Charlotte, my PA, to reschedule, but it was with my father, the other heads of departments, and my damn brother. Putting on my jacket, I started going to the boardroom. As I was walking, I thought I saw her in the corner of my eye. God, I needed to sort my shit out. I was starting to hallucinate the damn woman.

Entering the room, I greeted my father, our lawyer, Dominic, and two other heads seated on either side of me. I was the last to enter, and my father’s PA handed the other gentlemen and I a folder outlining the points covered in this meeting.

Pouring myself a glass of water, I glanced over the notes, and a wave of irritation came over me as I remembered the reason for this meeting. My father wanted to expand the company’s portfolio deeper into Queens and Brooklyn. We’d already agreed and come to terms with twenty-five out of the thirty-five blocks we needed, but our legal department couldn’t get the fucking deal sorted. So now they were bringing in specialists to help.

I was just about to signal to Charlotte when the specialist lawyers walked in, and I stopped breathing. Walking towards my father is the woman from the garage.

Part of me was convinced all of this was a dream or just another one of the morbid hallucinations I’d been having of her. But it wasn’t. She was there. Every fiber in my body was paying attention to her every move. My eyes cataloged every curve and dip, but her smoldering eyes drew me in. All her focus was on my father. She showed confidence, grace, elegance, and professionalism—all the attributes my father and other men there acknowledged and appreciated. Although I could understand all these characteristics, I couldn’t get over how stunning this woman was. As my eyes continued to examine her from head to toe greedily, I became instantly hard.

Fuck.

“Good morning. Will you be taking down the minutes?” Julian asked with a smarmy grin on his face.

I noticed a smile on a few other men’s faces, which did nothing for my rising anger. With a look of determination and the slightest hint of frustration, I watched as she straightened her back and opened her folder.

“No. I’ve been hired to help you close on the remaining ten blocks you’re struggling to negotiate on.”

Putting the folder down, she raised her hand to shake with my father’s outstretched one.

“Serena Parker, of Parker and Associates.”

The specialist firm we needed was hers.

What were the odds?

Ha.

That grin was wiped straight off my brother’s face. Then, her attention fell upon me. I’d just managed to discreetly adjust my hard-on into the waistband of my slacks when she walked over and offered me her hand.

She introduced herself. “Serena Parker.”

“Rhett Chambers,” I responded.

A shot of electricity shot through my body as our hands connected. The shock in her eyes as she registered it was me showed a slight sense of vulnerability, but it was only briefly visible before she schooled her face.

Her eyes felt like they could pierce through my soul, making me slightly uneasy. Her gaze darted to my mouth, and in what felt like slow motion, she ran her tongue across her glossy and juicy lips, making me instantly aware of what was going through her mind.

This would be the most challenging meeting I’d ever sat through.
