“Do you think it’s weird that when our mate touched Daniel, he seemed better? Or was it just a coincidence?” Blaze stood up from where he’d been scanning the ground, brushing off his knees.

“Not sure.” I glanced up at our window, where I expected to see our mate looking down at us. She was not. “But I think we’d better get back to the suite because our mate was not pleased to be left behind. She’s going to be wondering what we’re up to.”

“You’re right.” Blaze took two steps toward the door before he finished the words. “We’ve left her alone too long. I hope she’s okay.”

“She’s locked in the suite.” Cas quickstepped to catch up with him. “But she might be lonely.”

Not the kind of thing I expected to hear from the warrior in our group. Our mate was softening him up. But I wasn’t about to say anything about that. Instead, I followed them back into the building and through the hallways, moving with stealth to avoid being caught. If we had the least chance to return to the Urban Academy, we weren’t going to manage it by getting in trouble for missing curfew or any other charges they might want to throw at us. We didn’t have a student we rescued this time to keep them from punishing us for being out of the suite.

We ducked into the suite and closed the door behind us.

“Where is she?” Blaze always had the good questions.

“Bed, probably.” I went to get a drink of water. “She was pretty tired when we left. And not thrilled with us for making her stay here.”

“I don’t blame her for being unhappy about it, but she has to understand that we need to protect her.” Cas moved to the window and looked out. “Whatever is coming in with those lights is dangerous, obviously.”

“True.” I set the glass down and stretched. “But we aren’t going to wake her up just to inform her that we were right, are we?”

We all chuckled at that. It was so preposterous. And we were going to be spending the night with our mate again, this time knowing that it was the first night of the rest of our lives. “We could wake her up for something else,” I said.

“But we won’t,” Blaze said. “Because she needs her sleep. She has a test coming up, I think. And school is important to her. Another good reason to make sure we get moved to the Urban Academy. Our mate wants a good education, and she is much more likely to get it there than here in this semi-prison.”

Blaze and I went off to our rooms to get ready for bed, while Cas stopped off at the bathroom on the way to his, where our mate would be waiting. But when we got to his door, we found him standing just inside the doorway.

“What’s wrong?” I whispered, not wanting to wake her up. “Don’t you want to go to bed?” I couldn’t wait to get under the covers with Karelis. “Cas?”

“She’s not here,” he murmured. “Did you both check your beds?”

We’d both been in our rooms changing, but we ran back anyway to look then raced out to find her. We might get caught, but so what? Our mate wouldn’t have gone out on her own after we ordered her to stay in the suite.

Chapter Twelve

Karelis

I reached for anything, anything that would stop whoever had me from dragging me farther. The building’s darkness shrouded everything in black, not even one slice of light. Hell, I would’ve taken some of those damned lights, the dangerous ones over this nothingness.

“It’s time you learned a lesson, Karelis. You can’t just come in here and take what we’ve all wanted for so long.”

The voice was familiar, but I couldn’t put a name to it. The hand over my mouth and part of my nose made speech impossible and breathing a challenge.

Panic suffused me, and I barely contained Night from ripping out of me. Gasping for any amount of air, I scrambled for some coherent thought, a way to help myself.

Stupid, stupid, Karelis. I should’ve stayed my ass right there in the suite but I couldn’t just do that. I had to not trust my mates’ ability, and now look where it got me.

The assailant moved her hand slightly, and I took advantage of the new position and bit down on her finger as hard as I could, hoping that Night would pierce her with her fangs, though I didn’t know if that was even possible.

“Fuck! You bitch. Get her into the cage.”

The cage? What in the hell is the cage? “Let me go!” I managed to scream, hoping somehow my mates could hear me.

“Yeah,” another voice said, laughing. “We’ll let you go. After you learn your place.”

I cried out as I was tossed into the air to slam against a hard surface. Not concrete like the outside walls, I didn’t think. Maybe metal. Cold metal. I only had a small chance to catch my breath before the jeering started all over again.

“The Three Kings don’t belong to you.”

“You don’t belong at the academy.”
