Chapter Three

Karelis

The door hadn’t been shut more than a few seconds, but already my body chilled and my wolves lamented the absence of their mates. Our mates.

Still coming to terms with that one.

I knew leaving them and going back to my room was the right thing to do, but it didn’t make my wolves feel any less rotten about it.

“Hey, are you okay?” June asked. “I heard a student was beaten up or something?”

“I’m okay. I’m going to shower, and then I have lots to tell you.”

She snickered. “I hope it has something to do with your lack of lipstick.”

“Shush. I’ll be back.” I grabbed some clothes then ducked into the shower. While I was in there, I thought about everything from the night before. We hadn’t been afforded a sweet, slow date where they brought me to my door and kissed me good night. No, we had an almost murder and shuffling me into their suite so I didn’t potentially get killed.

I had to admit, ending the night cuddled up with those three men beat a gentle kiss at my door any day.

The scalding water rolled down my back as I rested my head against the shower wall. Even though my wolves were calling them mate, and they insisted that every shifter had a fated mate—or three—shutting off decades of programming by the Light Kingdom was hard to do. Their words echoed in my head no matter how much I wanted Casimir, Blaze, and Adan to be right.

I really did.

Tears flowed down my face as I ground my jaw, insistent on letting go of the doctrine drilled into my brain since I could remember. My second wolf was cursed. Even having a second wolf made me jinxed and unfit for a mate.

Somehow, being who I was made me unworthy of being mated.

It would take more than a shower and concentration to shake those thoughts from my brain, but I would do it.

Because my heart belonged to Cas, Adan, and Blaze.

I got out and dressed in a lounge set and padded back into the room. June sat at her desk, taking notes from a textbook. She was dressed for class, and a glance at the clock confirmed I didn’t have a lot of time to tell her everything.

“I’m about to blurt out some things and, after I do, I need you to give me your thoughts. Unadulterated because I’m kind of freaking out.”

She snorted. “Okay. Shoot.”

“The Three Kings think they are my fated mates, and I’m pretty damned sure they are. We went out last night and had an amazing time and made out in the back of the car. Then we came back, and there were lights, and I saw the guy who got hurt. And my touch might have helped him. So, I spent the night in their suite. This morning, they didn’t want me to leave. Like ever. They want me to stay there.”

Her mouth opened wide. “So why in the hell are you here?”

I put my hands on my hips. “Because with all of this going on, I thought I would come and be with you. I didn’t want you to be alone. It’s not safe out there. Trust me.”

“You can’t put me before your mates, Karelis. For the record, those three were your mates before you even came here, if you believe in Fate like I do. Once I saw how they looked at you, I knew, too. You’re late to the party.”

Seemed like the opposite of a party to me, especially with all my arguing against myself and my wolves.

Since when did I take the words of a cruel king over my own heart and my animals?

“I’m not putting you before my mates. But I’m not going to abandon you because I’m horny.”

She cracked up as she grabbed her bag. “You’re across the hall. If the boogeyman comes in to get me, then I’ll scream so loud that you can hear me. Or maybe loud enough for one of your gorgeous mates to hear? I bet they would come over here and save me.”

Night growled, the rumble pushing through my chest.

“Ha!” She pointed at me. “You are so mated. Well, I mean, clearly not mated mated, but they are yours. You officially belong to the Three Kings.”

Oh, I liked that sentiment way more than I should.
