But, like everything with Sam, I knew it would be short-lived. He’d get bored of her, then get back to his never-ending search for excitement.

All I had to do was wait.

The next morning at seven-forty-five, I passed through the kitchen and almost had a heart attack when I saw him there.

Washing dishes? Sam never did dishes.

“Why you up so early?” I asked grumpily.

His icy eyes flicked up to mine and he smirked knowingly. “Why you up so late?” he retorted. “Usually you’re out of here by seven and a half.”

“Didn’t sleep well,” I admitted.

Secretly, it was because I jerked off maybe one more time. Okay, twice.

How was I supposed to sleep when I could hear them going at it all night?!

But I didn’t even have to say that out loud.

Sam knew.

He always knew.

And he had the grace to avoid putting me on the spot. Though, he had that look on his face like he’d won some sort of game we’d been playing this whole time without my knowledge.

Screw him.

A knowing smirk spread across his face. “In answer to your question—”

“What question?” I asked, running my hand through my hair and feeling the crisp gel lock it in place.

“…you asked why I was up so early,” Sam pointed out. “My lady friend’s a teacher—”

“I’ve got to get to work,” I grumbled.

Sam’s smirk widened.

What was his problem?

I stormed toward the door, trying hard to make it seem like I didn’t care. But it didn’t seem fair to him—he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was still my best bro.

“Sorry, haven’t had coffee yet—”

“I made you one,” Sam said, gesturing to a to-go cup on the counter. “What can I say? I’ve been feeling generous lately.”

“…thank you,” I said begrudgingly, wrapping my fingers around the warm paper cup.

It felt like a pathetic consolation prize or something.

No.Ifelt like a pathetic consolation prize.

But I didn’t know why.

I needed time alone in the car to think…

Sam spoke again. “Sixteen ounces of Colombian brew, two teaspoons of sweetener, two tablespoons of cream. Did I get it right?”

I scrunched up my face, feeling even more inexplicably annoyed. “Yeah.”
