There must have been something special about this one.

Well, I already knew there was something special about Grace. I’d driven her home last Sunday, after all.

And if I was honest with myself, she’d been driving me crazy ever since.

It was probably just the reminder that Sam had someone now and I didn’t. It wasn’t a competition or anything.

But it felt like it.

Soon, he might be in a relationship.

And I’d be alone. Again.

So during my lunch break, I downloaded one of the dating apps, set up a profile, and started swiping.

“Cahn you take a picture of me nehxt to the (sigh)n?” Jillian asked in her breathy voice.

I frowned, but I wrapped my fingers around her sparkling phone case with her jingling assortment of keys, keychains, and knickknacks nonetheless. “Sure.”

She took a deep inhale, then on the exhale, “Thanks, No-ah.”

When I picked her up and she first started talking, I thought maybe she had a breathing issue or something. But I knew it would be too rude to ask, so I held my tongue.

I held the glittering phone up and took a shot while she struck the same pose that she’d offered the previous dozen times.

“Got it. I think,” I said, trying to be polite.

Trying not to seem too eager to get in the venue, away from her and toward Grace.

Jillian rushed over, her ironed dark hair flapping in the night breeze. She peered down at the phone with a frown and another exhale, as if she was exerting herself just by moving her head.

I saw her threaded eyebrow twitch and she gazed at the photo with disapproval.

“I lhook fhat. Tahke ah-nother one.”

“‘Kay,” I said, irritation simmering within me.

I liked to think of myself as a patient person. But Jillian was testing me.

As I continued my photographer slavery, I was filled with regret.

I shouldn’t have gone on that dating app.

I shouldn’t have started swiping.

I shouldn’t have set up a date…

Things would have been a million times better if I just showed up alone…

“Hey dude,” Sam said from behind me.

Thank God. “Hey bro!”

I turned and caught my breath when I saw Grace standing there in a glittering blue cocktail dress, her hair down and free-flowing around her shoulders. Even in the dim light outside the venue, I could see that she was wearing some kind of subtle brown makeup around her eyes that made the color of her irises pop.

Green. Dark green.

“Glad you came out!” Sam said happily.
