Now I wanted to take it all back. I wanted her to be out of my car, just for a little while, so I could have alone time to sulk.

Which was weird as all fuck, because Ineverwanted alone time.

“You look hurt,” she said in a small voice.

“Stop.”

“I can’t. I care.”

“No, you don’t care. You feel guilty.”

She recoiled as if I’d hit her.

I wanted to say sorry, but I couldn’t make the words come out. Instead, I said, “Put some music on or something.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re going to talk to me about what the hell just happened,” she said, looking at me with fire in her eyes.

Something passionate unfurled inside me like a solar flare. She wanted to fight.

She wanted fire.

Fuck yes. I’d just gotten out of a fight, but that wasn’t the kind of fight I’d wanted.

No; I needed to fight with Grace. And here she was, standing her ground. She wasn’t folding like I’d expected her to.

“I beat the shit out of your ex.”

“Oh really? Looks like he beat the shit out of you.”

“What did you expect? I’m just a smooth-talking pretty boy. The dude’s taller than me. Bulkier. Did you expect me to pull out some ninja shit?”

She shook her head in frustration. “Oh my God, what is it with you men? You think being a freaking caveman is going to solve anything?”

“Yes. It solves everything.”

“You’re being unreasonable. This isn’t you.”

“What about me seems fucking reasonable, Grace? Name one fucking thing.”

She opened her mouth, then closed it. Then opened it again. “I just… I didn’t like seeing you get hurt.”

“I’m not hurt,” I lied.

“Well, I just want to make sure you’re okay.”

“How many fucking times do I have to say it?!”

She cowed down. “I’m sorry, I—”

“I know you’re sorry. You missed the show. You went outside so you could talk to your ex. You were standing there against the wall, practicallybeggingfor him to kiss you—”

“It’s complicated,” she explained in a small voice.

“You know what? Everything with you is complicated.”
