Relief flew through me when she was nowhere to be found.

I was safe.

For now.

Then I shifted my focus to look for Grace instead.

Focus on what you do want, rather than what you don’t want,Dr. Silk said.

…not that I wanted Grace or anything.

I just needed to tell her some shit.

And she needed to hear it.

I needed her to need me.

It was fucked up, but whatever. At least I was acknowledging it. I wanted to be somebody’s hero. But how could you be a hero when no one around you needed saving?

“Sir?”

“Hm?” I asked, snapping my attention to the barista.

“What would you like to order?”

“I’m still waiting for someone.”

I glanced at the doors, wondering where the hell Grace was. Had she blown me off? If she had, that was ridiculous. She was the one that wanted to meet in the first place—

“Sorry I’m late,” Grace said breathlessly from behind me.

Delight exploded in my chest when I turned to face her.

Today she looked…different.Maybe she looked more relaxed—maybe it was because her dark brown hair was down or something. I could see it was shinier than normal—that was weird. Did she oil it or something? I remember Real-Summer once explained to me that she’d soak her hair in egg whites once every few months.

Sounded like some fucked up witch shit.

Anyway, whatever Grace did with her hair, it was working or whatever.

Then again, maybe she looked like… good because she’d probably been having the best sex of her life with her inky boys.

My jaw hurt. I relaxed it.

She dove into her vintage-looking purse and pulled out her wallet.

“No, this one’s on me,” I said, waving her away.

“You sure?”

“Don’t make me offer twice,” I said grumpily.

She crossed her arms. “Whatever.”

It was times like this I was glad I had a beard. That way, I could keep looking like a badass motherfucker and no one could tell if I was grinning or not.

“What do you want?” I asked her, keeping my arms crossed over my chest and looking up at the menu. I didn’t care about her, and I didn’t care what her expression said.

“Uh… if you don’t mind, if it would be okay with you, I’d like a large black coffee and a cinnamon roll.”
