Sam closed his eyes and nodded sagely. “He couldn’t stand it.”

“Couldn’t stand what? Me?”

“No, no, not you, Gracelet,” Sam said. He brushed some dark tendrils of hair from my face and tucked them behind my ear. “He couldn’t stand the emotional intimacy.”

“But…” I looked down.

Sam touched my hand.

I stopped fidgeting with my ring finger. “…but…Ithink I’m scared of it too. I mean, you were there…”

Sam closed his eyes and nodded again. “I was. I felt it.”

“You felt what?”

He opened his eyes and stared deep into my soul. “Your walls. They’ve been there every time.”

My stomach dropped. “…oh.”

Sam’s eyes widened slightly. “Grace, what are you hearing?”

“That… sex with me sucks.”

Sam laughed and flopped backward onto the pillow. It was a hearty, full-bodied sound.

I didn’t laugh with him.

I didn’t even smile.

When the last of his laughter had bubbled out, he turned to me with a grin. “Sex with you… isnotbad. Grace, it’s fucking amazing. You’re incredible in bed. So much so, I don’t think you even realize…” he trailed off. “Anyway. Why do you think Noah and I are so into you?”

I thought of my bullet journal with their souls scribbled inside and shrugged.

My eyes landed on the detailed, sapphire stars intersecting across Sam’s hip.

Sam touched his thumb and index finger to my chin and gave me a deep, longing look. “You. Are. The.Sexiest…”he planted a long, passionate kiss on my lips, “…fucking. Thing. I’ve. Ever. Seen.”

“Thanks.” I smiled bashfully. “But… my walls…”

I tried to picture the walls, but in my mind’s eye, all I saw was this shameful black gunk swirling through my body.

He’d seen.

NO ONE was allowed to see—

Sam gently grabbed my wrist. “Grace… where is your mind going?”

“Huh?”

“Your pupils changed. I don’t know how to describe it, but I can tell your anxiety’s triggered.”

“Oh. Hang on, just let me breathe for a second.”

He eyed me.

“…don’t do that.”

“Do what?”
