She continued beating Grayson all the way to the door, then slammed it after he was finally outside.

I gathered up the towel and stood in the living room, feeling pathetic. Feeling like a cheater.

I closed my eyes and saw Eden’s, staring at me with nothing but kindness. And by letting Grayson…haveme like that, even though we hadn’t reallydoneanything… That made me the other woman, right?

Homewrecker. Cheater. Whore.I waited for Disgrace to attack me with her weapons, but again, there was nothing. My head was curiously clear.

Had Disgrace been… had she beenfuckedout of me?

Effie turned her gaze to me, her emerald eyes shining bright with liquid fury. Her hair was a mess, she still had her nerdy Zelda’s Lullaby shirt on, a pair of oversized sweatpants, and her tiny, angry fist was still clutching the corner of her tubular YAAAS QUEEN pillow.

I burst out in laughter.

A smile spread across her face, and she filled the room with giggles too.

My laughter crescendoed as I slumped down on the couch, shaking me to my core with joy. “So… sostupid!” I cried, pinching the bridge of my nose. Tears of mirth leaked from the corners of my eyes as I replayed the image of Effie whacking Grayson in the face with that pillow. “You chased him away like… like…”

“Like KHAAAAAN!” she cried.

I rolled back on the couch, wheezing with laughter.

She fell to her knees on the living room floor, laughing so hard she toppled over onto her side.

The moment was magical.

It took a few moments to regain my composure. But when I finally did, I sat up and had to wipe my tears away. I was so overcome with warmth and happiness and gratitude for my sister that it overflowed into speech. “I love you Effie.”

She blinked a few times, wiping under her eyes with the back of her hand. “I love you too, girl. But you’ve got some explaining to do.”

My shoulders sagged. “I know…”

“But it can wait! First, burritos.” She launched from the floor and flew into the kitchen, returning with a hefty brown paper bag.

“You’re my savior,” I said, my mouth watering.

“I know,” she said with her hand on her hip sassily. She plunged her hand into the crinkling bag and pulled out a shining silver tube. “This tube of cheese, guacamole, and crispy french fries is for you—” She passed the baton to me. “And thisdeliciouslittle pillow of carne asada is forme.Cheers, bitch.”

I chuckled and tapped my burrito to hers.

“To chasing away assholes for you like I used to chase that rooster away from you when we were kids,” Effie said proudly.

“That wasn’t an asshole, though, that was a cock,” I said stupidly.

She giggled. “Ooh, my sister’sback!Oh, how I’ve missed you,” Effie cooed, taking a generous bite of her burrito.

I smiled a little sadly at the realization. “…I missed me, too.”

Because without Disgrace in my head to torment me, it felt like most of my filters set up between my words and the world were mysteriously gone. For some reason, I could confidently let my thoughts swim into the atmosphere like colorful koi fish, without Disgrace there to pick them off with spears of her criticism.

Effie looked at me lovingly, her eyes sparkling with joy. Then one of her manicured eyebrows twitched upward. “Now, you have to tell meallabout your night with that guy—”

“Yeah, no—”

My phone buzzed.

“Ooh, is that him coming back for anotherslice?” she asked, waggling her eyebrows.

I peered at my glowing screen. It was a number I didn’t recognize.
