She looked at me all scandalized.

“Cut it out. I don’t care either way, and I’m not gonna judge,” I said with a dismissive wave. “If you fucked one of them, you’re fucked.”

“One of them?” she asked.

I let out a long sigh. “Look, I don’t care if you think I’m crazy for saying this, but it needs to be said. I don’t care if you believe me or not, because the truth is, soon you will. You write things with that pen, and they come to life. The more emotion you pour into it, the more intense the ghost is—or whatever.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Did your ex show up acting all weird and critical?”

“How did you—?”

“Because it happened to me,” I said. “I wrote down what I wanted in my dia—journal, with that pen. Next thing I know, this perfect babe showed up in my life. But I was a total fuckingidiotand all my evil exes did too.”

“Evilexes? Don’t you think that’s a little bit dramatic—”

“Don’t you think whatever the fuck happened with you and your ex today was a little bit dramatic?” I snapped.

She paled.

“Yeah, I saw that Clark Kent asshole leave your apartment like a bat outta hell. It’s easy enough to put two and two together.”

Her fingers fiddled rapidly, as if she was knitting.

“Thatwasyour ex, right?” I said, the shadow of doubt crossing my mind. I didn’t know what it was about this lady, but she made me feel less sure of myself than usual.

I didn’t like it.

“Yeah… his name’s Grayson—”

“I don’t give a fuck what his name was.”

Grace winced.

I cleared my throat and softened my voice. “The point is, and this is the real important takeaway, is that the dude in your apartment earlier—he wasn’t really your ex.”

Her eyes snapped to mine. They were this weird brownish-green color, like they couldn’t decide which color to be.

“Yeah, I know it’s a real mind-fuck, but try to wrap your head around it. Have you also noticed that the voice in your head that tells you you’re a piece of shit is fuckinggone?”

“Yes!” she said desperately, her eyes wide.

“Okay, so get this—that nasty little fucker isn’tgone. It just took the form you gave it.”

A single line appeared between her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

I swept my hand over my forehead and sighed again. “I don’t know how it works, and I sure as fuck don’t knowwhyit works this way, but all I can tell you is what happened to me. I wrote about my ex. Next thing I know, she showed up in my life and shit hit the fan.”

Grace looked confused.

I wanted to grab her shoulders and shake the understanding into her.

“So… does that mean things with Grayson can go back to normal?”

I widened my eyes and shook my head. “Haven’t you beenlistening? He’s not really your ex. He’s the afterimage of your ex, with everything you hated about him italicized and bolded with whatever the fuck ink you used.”

“I don’t hate anything about Grayson,” she declared with a pout.
