I snapped out of it. “Huh?”

Mea Culpa waved her hand in front of my face. “Oh, so you’re alive. Dude, you’ve been staring at me for like thirty seconds.”

“Sorry,” I muttered, straightening my sleeves. “The flow took me.”

“Yeah, yeah. Rip current.”

“R.I.P. to my attention span.”

She rolled her eyes.

I grinned.

“Now I know you’re rhyming current with current events and currency, probably using some ADHD joke as a seed.”

My grin widened. “How’d you know?”

She cocked a threaded eyebrow. “Cuz fool, I’m doing the same damn thing! Anyway. You coming to the show tomorrow night?”

“‘Course. Can’t wait to see Rival choke.”

She stiffened, then relaxed. I knew her and Rival had history, but I didn’t know the extent of it. All I knew was that there was some kind of issue between him, Mea, and Spoken.

Mea still looked slightly uncomfortable. I had to think of something to say to get out of this sticky emotional territory or whatever the fuck was going on…

“Choke on his beef, I mean.”

“He don’t eat beef. He’s vegan,” she chirped.

We both laughed, and that dispelled all the tension in the room.

After a pause, Mea smiled, like she’d been waiting to ask me something this whole time, and finally saw her opening. “You should bring your girl.”

I shifted in my chair. “I don’t have a girl.”

“Liar. You’re all like, differenttoday. You got someone on your mind.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Inside I was screaming under her burning magnifying glass gaze.

How could women always tell?!

“Whatever. Bring her to the show. It’ll give you a good excuse to do that peacock shit.”

“Peacock? Please. I’m more like a magpie bringing my ladies gold—”

“You mean trash?”

I smiled. “Just as I thought.”

“That’s an old meme,” she said, her eyes sparkling. “I’m ‘bout to sign your words up for Medicare.”

“Medicaid, baby. I’m young and well-off, but I’ve got poor judgment.”

She cackled. “If you bring your lady to the show, am I gonna need to call Waste Management? I got ‘em on speed dial, you know—”

“On the contrary. I think she might be too good for me.”
