I sighed, but I navigated through Spotify’s dark UI and pressed play.

The first sounds of the song played through the speakers with crisp clarity.

A familiar embarrassment flooded through me, but I tried to clear my head as the song decorated the mood.

I told myself I didn’t care about impressing Sam; that he was an annoying dude-bro and kind of an asshole. But as I snuck another look at his profile and saw his sharp, pretty boy features, his dark hair, his icy blue eyes, and his keen focus on the road, I knew I was lying to myself.

I did want to impress him. I wanted him to think I was cool and unavailable.

I wanted him to chase me.

“Well?” he said. “Are you listening?”

“What?”

His shoulders sank. “The lyrics.”

I quieted for a moment and listened. But it sounded the same as always. “Am I supposed to be noticing something?”

Sam gave me a look I couldn’t quite place.

Again, shame prickled through me. I felt like I was failing some kind of quiz.

He smiled crookedly.

It revealed his white teeth—and his slightly extra-pointy canine tooth.

“I’m learning a lot about what you experienced,” he said.

“It’s just a song. You don’t know anything about me.”

Sam gestured to the speakers. “Is this not what happened to you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He winced. “I’m trying to understand you. This is my preferred way to do it.”

“What, through music?”

“Yeah. It makes more sense to me than just words.”

“What, so, just talking to me like a normal person is beneath you?”

He glanced at me. “I didn’t say that.”

“Well, you implied it.”

He furrowed his brow. “I just… look, I’m just saying knowing someone’s music taste is more… enriching than regular conversation.”

Something about that irked me. “Sam… what are you trying to say? Just tell me what you’re trying to say!”

Sam pulled the car to the side of the road and put it in park.

“What are you doing?! Grayson could be following us—”

“I don’t give a fuck,” Sam said softly. He turned in his seat to look me in the eye.

The pure want and desire and energy in his sapphire eyes pinned me to the seat like an ice arrow lancing straight through my heart.
