I take a step closer as he slips his sunglasses out of his back pocket. "Why are you like this?"

"Like what?"

"Confrontational. Egotistical. Unhinged."

"I'm trying to help you," he adjusts the glasses on his face. "I'm being helpful."

"You are not," I reply. "If you were, you'd go home."

"He's going to break your heart," he warns with a chuckle. "Because guys like Cash don't go off to college without their high school girlfriends and—"

"You know why I can't go," I interrupt.

"Honestly, Blondie, don't you think you deserve someone who desires you the same way you desire them?"

"Excuse me?" Wilder is giving me serious whiplash right now. And who says desires? What is this? A historical romance novel?

"You have what I'd like to call a high sex drive. And Cash? He has a low one. You're incompatible. If you don't have sex in common, how the hell are you going to survive twenty years down the road?"

"Huh," I frown. "I never realized how shallow you are."

"I'm not shallow. I'm trying to help you."

No, he's not. He's trying to get rid of me for the summer, so he has Cash all to himself.

"If I didn't know any better," I raise my chin, "I'd think you have a thing for Cash. And you're jealous he'd rather have sex with me instead of you."

"I'm man enough to admit that if I had an inclination for men, Cash would be at the top of my list. Turns out, I'm a fan of pussy."

"You disgust me."

"You annoy me."

"Ugh!" I throw my hands up in the air. "I want one night with my boyfriend. Why can't you disappear?"

"Because Cash told me he has something important to tell us."

"What?"

Wilder smiles victoriously. "He didn't tell you that part, did he?"

No, he didn't. He just asked me to grab dinner. Why wouldn't Cash tell me he had something to share? Why do I always have to find out from Wilder?

"Because you're incompatible," Wilder whispers.

"I hate you," I sneer.

"I'm aware."

"Why can't you—"

"Why can't you admit that what you and Cash once had is a thing of the past?"

I shake my head. "Don't you have a hobby? Something to live for other than ruining my life?"

"I didn't realize I had that much power over your life," he purses his lips. "Although, living in your head rent-free does make me feel giddy. And that's not an emotion I feel very often."

"You know what?" I hold my hands out at my sides. "Enjoy dinner with Cash. Alone."
