“Anything,” I confirm, meaning it one hundred percent.

I wrap an arm around her, her shoulder nestled under my arm. “May I?” I ask, more as an afterthought because this feels so natural. So right.

“I think you already did,” she replies lightly, and together we stand at the edge of the roof, gazing out at the night sky.

The first of the fireworks is released with a loud screech and bang, and Maddie jumps, burying herself closer to me. Instinctively, I lean down and kiss her forehead.

We stand and watch the fireworks together, the myriad of colors alight in the night sky, the sound of gasps from people below floating up to us.

“What is it about fireworks that's so?—”

“Magical,” I finish for her, and she smiles up at me.

Our gazes lock.

Now. Now is the moment.

I reach out and gently cup her face in my hand, tilting it up, my eyes not leaving hers. She moves to face me, and I slide my hand from her jaw until I reach the warm, soft skin of her neck. Tangling my fingers in her hair, she lets out a gasp.

I could not hold myself back from kissing her now if a fleet of horses was dragging me away.

Slowly, savoring every single moment, I lean down and breathe in her scent, a heady mixture of summer and sweetness and her.

“You have enchanted me, body and soul,” I murmur, my heart thudding against my ribcage, my breath shallow.

I bend my head and as our lips finally, finally touch, it's as though my entire being is set alight. Words are no longer enough. I need to show her how much I want her. How much she means to me.

Her lips are soft and plump and inviting, and finally pressed against mine, it takes every ounce of my strength not to rush this thing. I want all of her. Now. To possess her, to know she's mine, to show her everything I've been holding inside.

With the strength of forged steel, I force myself to pull back from her lips, only for her to bunch the neck of my shirt in her fist, pulling me back against her lips. It's wonderful and unexpected and if I thought my body was in risk of being on fire before, I'm now ready to combust.

This moment is everything. Everything.

It’s as though I’ve been waiting my entire life for this one kiss. Time has slowed. All that exists is her and me in this moment, fireworks flashing around us, our kiss deepening, pulling me closer and closer until I could utterly lose myself in her.

My Maddie.

My beautiful, sweet Texas.

Our dizzying kiss quite literally takes my breath away, and we stand and grin at one another.

“That was—” I begin, not sure how to explain the most incredible kiss of my life.

“It was,” she replies, her chest rising and falling with each shallow breath she takes, making me want her more.

I forget my resolve to take this slow. How can I when the woman I’m falling for looks like she does on this perfect night?

I am but flesh and blood.

I place my hands on her waist and lift her up, pressing her against the battlement. She lets out another gasp, and I trail a line of kisses up her neck and along her jawline, loving the sweet taste of her skin, until I reach her lips. I claim her mouth once again, kissing her until the fireworks come to a stop and my heart feels like it may burst.

“Maddie,” I say as I catch my breath.

She smiles at me and I notice the way her eyes are the deepest pools in the evening light, her dark lashes curling up towards her perfectly arched eyebrows. There’s a smattering of freckles across her nose, and her lips are full and inviting.

I don’t want to forget a single detail. I want to remember her. All of her.

Our gaze intensifies as something deep and strong passes between us. It makes my breath catch in my throat and I know this thing is so much bigger than I’d ever anticipated. Big and wonderful and exactly what I’ve been searching for.
