Now I’m suspicious. “What’s in the basket?”

His smile becomes mischievous. “You’ll see. Let’s start with dessert.”

My eyes light up. “Now you’re talking.”

He pulls out a box and hands it to me. I quickly open it to see a variety of desserts. Chocolate strawberries, cream puffs, and cupcakes decorated to look like pandas.

“Have I told you I love you lately?” I say as I try to decide what to eat first.

He laughs. “Yes, but I always like to hear you say it.”

“Well then, I love you, Tarek Jarn. Almost as much as I love dessert.” And with that, I pop a cream puff in my mouth.

He rolls his eyes and chuckles, also taking a cream puff. “Well then, I must be doing something right.”

We munch on the desserts for a bit, just talking about whatever comes to mind. The setting sun hits his face in just such a way that he looks even more handsome than usual. Suddenly, I’m taken aback that this man is actually mine.

“What?” Tarek asks.

I shake my head. “It’s just, you’re more than I could have ever imagined I would ever have. You’re brilliant and creative and so passionate. I hope you know I mean it when I say I love you like I’ve never loved anyone in my life.”

His gaze softens, and he reaches for the basket. “I think it’s time for your present.”

I sit up straighter. “I get a present?”

He digs through the basket and pulls out a puzzle cube. I grin wide as I take it from him. Tarek has gotten me lots of these since we started dating, and they always have some sort of little present inside once you solve it.

I study the cube for a few minutes before clicking my tongue as I begin to solve it. “Oh, Tarek, I’m afraid this one is much too easy. You see you just slide this, twist here and here, reverse these two, and snap that back.”

The cube opens, and my triumphant grin freezes as I see what’s inside.

A gorgeous diamond ring.

I stare at Tarek to see if it means what I think it does. He takes my hand and squeezes it. “Sloane Fields, you are the most incredible, intelligent, remarkable person I’ve ever met. I made the mistake once of thinking I could live without you, and I never want to make that mistake again.”

He takes the ring from the cube and gets down on one knee. “Will you marry me?”

I blink back happy tears as I smile at him. “Yes. Of course, I’ll marry you!”

He puts the ring on, and I kiss him. Tarek pulls me close to him and kisses me back just as fiercely.

Once, I thought happiness looked like me being the greatest thief. Of having to rely on no one and do it all alone. Now, I really have what I’ve wanted all along. To be loved and respected and surrounded by people who support me.

And with Tarek, I know the possibilities are truly endless.

The End
