My lungs expand when she plays along, just like we talked about. Time to wrap this up. Two steps backward, my gun still held high. “We’ll be seeing you.”

Leo and Matteo take the cue and as one, we walk backward a few steps.

“We’re not done here, daughter!”

Raven stops and stares at Vito. “Oh but we are. And I’m not your fucking daughter.” She lowers her gun, and her and Dante spin around and calmly walk down the aisle.

“Don’t even think about it,” Matteo growls out at some prick who was lifting his gun.

“C’mon, Dad. Let them leave, yeah? We’ve got a fight to catch,” one of the sons—Raven’s alleged brothers—says.

Matteo jerks his head to the side, and Leo and I both take the cue to pick up the pace. He’s the last one standing there, and after a moment, when it looks like they’re going to let us leave peacefully, Matteo turns around and walks away. It’s a sign of disrespect, and it hits its mark.

Vito’s face turns a comical shade of red, but one of the sons steps in front of him. I watch my brother’s back as he calmly strides toward me.

“You couldn’t have stepped in a few minutes earlier?” His voice is low, his jaw clenched.

I arch a brow and turn around to walk next to him. “Me? I thought you would’ve broken that shit up ten minutes ago.”

He rubs the back of his neck and picks up the pace. “Yeah, well, I’m trying to not smother her since someone keeps fucking telling me that she can handle more than we think.”

I smirk and watch as Dante hustles our girl into a black SUV. “Humble is a good look on you, brother.”

“Don’t push it, Rafe,” he snaps.

My smirk settles into a relaxed smile and I climb into the car, settling next to my girl with an arm around her. She leans her head on my shoulder but doesn’t say anything. Her body sags a little, and my chest cracks at her pain. I toy with the ends of her hair, twirling the soft locks between my fingers and place a kiss on the top of her head.

“It’s alright, Raven. We’ve got you.”
