“I would imagine that costs a lot of money.”

“Doc friend of mine said about twenty thousand bucks.”

“So he really needs his inheritance. What about the man who visited the Randolphs?”

“The guy’s a shrink by the name of Anthony Richards. Apparently, Sam wanted him to find his parents incompetent so he could get a power of attorney and sell the property.”

“Richards admitted that?”

Peppers nodded. “After a few drinks, he did. He was going to get paid on the back end if he got the parents committed.”

“It backfired because I think it made his father change his will, almost ensuring Sam will get nothing. Now, what about the blue convertible?”

“Nothing yet. Sam sold his car about two years ago. It doesn’t belong to Christine or her husband, either. I checked the records. I’ll keep digging.”

“Thanks, Donny, you’ve done great work.”

“Oh, Shirl wanted me to remind you about the hairdo thing, if you’re up for it.”

DuBose fingered a few strands. “I actually might be due for something new,” she said thoughtfully, as though she wasn’t simply talking about her hair.

He handed her a card. “You ever feel unsafe or whatever, you call me, okay?”

She took the card and glanced up at him. “Thanks. And Donny?”

“Yeah?”

“I could not have been more wrong about you. I’m sorry.”

“Book by its cover. We all do it. And I’m real glad you showed up, Desiree. Jack’s a good lawyer, but he and I know you’re at a whole other level on the legal spectrum.” He left.

Ten minutes later the door banged open and a stricken Jack appeared there.

She stood and gazed at him fearfully. “Jack? What is it? What’s happened?”

He put a steadying hand on the wall and looked at her, his eyes filled with tears. “Lucy died on the table.”

CHAPTER 56

YOUR HONOR, HIS SISTER WAS brutally murdered, almost certainly by a man opposed to Mr. Lee’s representation of Jerome and Pearl Washington. In light of that I believe that a continuance of the trial date for one month is appropriate.” DuBose paused and stared up expectantly at Judge Ambrose.

He said, “I surely sympathize with Mr. Lee and his family. What a horrific event.”

“Not to mention that someone tried to murder me in my hotel room,” she added.

“Yes, I heard about that as well. I don’t know what this country is coming to.”

Ambrose glanced at Battle, who had risen to his feet. “Mr. Battle?” said the judge.

“It goes without saying that the commonwealth condemns these acts of violence, Your Honor. And I hope whoever did them is caught and punished.” He hesitated and glanced at DuBose. “And... under these tragic circumstances, and in respect of the grieving Lee family, the commonwealth will agree to a one-month extension.”

DuBose mouthed a thank-you to Battle, who nodded curtly.

Ambrose looked out at the sea of reporters, all of whom were eagerly awaiting his ruling.

The judge scratched his chin. “All of what you both said is perfectly reasonable.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” said DuBose as Battle nodded.
