“So what’s next for you?” he asked quietly.

“Back to Chicago to catch up on laundry and paying bills. And then there’s a case in Georgia that I’m needed on. And then one in Texas after that.”

“And on and on goes the carousel?”

“My work is not a game, Jack,” she said curtly.

“Never said it was. It’s the most important work a lawyer can be doing. But—”

“But what?”

“But you are entitled to a personal life, Desiree.”

She snapped, “I don’t have a husband at home taking care of everything while I’m working. I don’t have someone to have the babies I’m too busy to carry, and then raise them. Okay? This is my life. All of it. I have room for nothing else!”

Jack held up his hands. “All right.”

DuBose looked down for a moment, as though she were making an important decision. She leveled her gaze on him. “I was engaged to be married. His name was Paul.”

“What happened?”

“He—”

Before she could finish the garage’s side door opened and Jeff walked in.

“Where have you been?” asked Jack.

“Over at the Hanovers’.”

“Why?” demanded his brother.

“I went to see Christine, but she wasn’t there.”

“So you just left then?”

“Well, I did talk to Patsy for a while. I gave her a ride home after she finished up for the day. Daddy let me borrow his truck.”

“Who’s Patsy?” asked Jack.

“Their maid. She’s been with Christine since Christine was a kid. She brought Patsy with her when she married Gordon. They’re real close.”

“Right. We saw her when we went over there for the will reading,” noted Jack.

“How is Patsy doing?” asked DuBose.

“Not good. She’s totally devoted to Christine, and Christine is not doin’ well.”

“She’s been through hell, all right,” noted Jack.

“Patsy said Christine was cryin’ her eyes out the day her parents were killed.”

“Wait a minute. The day her parents were killed?” said Jack.

Jeff said, “What?”

“Christine and Gordon were in DC and didn’t get home until very late. Didn’t you hear Christine’s testimony?”

Now Jeff looked confused. “I guess I wasn’t really focused on that. Patsy told me that Christine told her to go home early that day.”
