“We were fixin’ to leave when Miss Christine and her family showed up.”

“And were they friendly toward you?” asked DuBose pointedly.

“Oh, yeah, they seemed fine.”

“And when did the luncheon happen?” asked DuBose.

“First day ’a June. I know ’cause it was Darla Jean’s birthday the next day.”

“Okay, anything else that we might need to know about that day?” asked DuBose.

Pearl shook her head. “No, I don’t think so.”

Jack glanced at DuBose and said, “You need to know that they’re trying to have me removed as Jerome’s lawyer.”

“Can they do that?” asked Pearl anxiously.

“I was worried they might until Desiree showed up. Now I think we’ll be okay.”

Miss Jessup fixed a discerning gaze on Jack. “You talk to your daddy yet?”

“No, I haven’t.”

“Then you might want to. He took a chance comin’ by my house again.”

Jack stared at her, concern flicking over his features. “Did anything happen?”

“You go on and talk to him.” She glanced at Pearl. “He tell you what all I said.” Her gaze moved to DuBose. “And you can introduce Desiree to him, and your momma.”

She and Jack had a little stare-down.

“Okay, I will.”

“Tell your momma I said hello.”

CHAPTER 27

WHEN JACK OPENED THE DOOR to his parents’ house, Lucy appeared and gave her brother a crushing hug.

“Lucy, this is Desiree DuBose, a friend of mine.”

Lucy next gave DuBose an embrace that almost knocked the woman off her feet.

“Lucy loves hugs,” said Jack, grinning. “Getting and giving them.”

A startled DuBose said breathlessly, “I can see that.”

Lucy bellowed, “Momma, Daddy? It be Jack. And a girl!”

She turned and scuttled off. “Momma, Daddy? It be Jack. And a girl!”

DuBose looked at Jack with a questioning expression.

“My mother went to the dentist before she knew she was carrying Lucy. Laughing gas. Not good for a baby in the womb, apparently.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Robert?” his mother called out.
