Especially the sex!

Caressing his cheek, I leave a soft kiss on his slightly parted lips, where his warm breath escapes a little. Inhaling as he exhales, I breathe him in and feel like, in some weird way, we were meant to be.

Could this be fate?

Chapter 10

Frank

A month into my fake marriage, and things couldn’t be better. Lisa’s a natural and has fallen right into place. It’s almost like she was always with me.

I leave her to take care of the floral shop because I have a meeting with my brother to get to. When I enter his home, I see Sheila.

She comes to me with open arms, and we exchange cheek kisses and hugs before she asks, “And where is your beautiful new bride?”

“She’s at the shop. We have a big order to fill, so she had to stay to take care of that.” With our one-month anniversary a day away, I’d like to give her something to commemorate it, so I ask, “You got any ideas what I can get her for our first month anniversary?”

“A necklace and earring set.” Touching her own earrings, she adds, “A matching bracelet would be nice too. Nothing too gaudy, just something simple and elegant. Her olive skin tone would look good with gold. Or silver. Either would look lovely on her.”

“I like gold.” With an idea of what to get her in my mind now, I whistle lightheartedly as I head to my brother’s office. “I’ll come to say bye before I leave,” I tell her.

“You do that. I’ll be in the sewing room. I’m making a quilt for Carmen. We found out she’s having a boy.” She’s all smiles as she heads back to her quilting.

The thought of my cousin Carmen having a son makes me smile too. It’s not like I’m trying to get my wife pregnant, but if it happened, I wouldn’t be upset.

As soon as I get to Enzo’s office, I see two guards on either side of his door and nod at them. “Hey, boys, how’s it going?”

Both nod without saying a word, and then the one on the right opens the door for me. I see three others when I step inside, and the door is closed behind me.

“Hello, all,” I say.

Enzo gets up from his seat behind his enormous cherry wood desk and hands me a Cuban cigar. “Take a seat, brother. Now that you’re here, I can give you boys the big news.”

“I like big news.” I take the cigar and sit down as the others take seats too.

Enzo comes around the desk and takes a seat on the edge. “The summit has been set.”

Bobby, my brother’s underboss, claps his hands, his meaty paws making a booming sound. “Finally,” he says. “How long we been waitin’ on this thing?”

“Months,” Enzo says. “If it weren’t for the sudden death of one of the dons from Dallas, it most likely wouldn’t be happening now.”

“Brady’s dead?” I knew the man well. “Damn it. He was one of the good ones.”

Leo, one of the men my brother is taking to the summit as a guard, asks, “Was it a hit?”

“I hope not,” I say. “All we need are some hot rivals showing up in the same place. The summit is already gonna be plenty hostile. Fresh hits will only make it that much worse.”

Enzo shakes his head. “Brady choked on a piece of overcooked steak.”

Stanly, an enforcer, asks, “Was it one of those chicken-fried steaks he likes to serve all the time?”

“I got no idea.” Enzo gives Stanly a look that says he needs to stop asking stupid questions. “We have things to plan. That’s why I brought you guys in today. I’m taking all of you and your wives. No one else can come.”

Bobby holds up a finger, showing he has something to say. “They might not be at the summit, but we will have a rather large presence in the area. Where’s it going to be held, boss?”

“Roxbury.” He lights up a cigar he pulls out of the breast pocket of his suit. “There’s a low-level man named Danny the Donut King who has an estate there.”

The trouble that came from the Apalachin summit in the fifties comes to mind. “How are we going to be sure the authorities don’t get wise about what we’re doing?”
