Turning the corner, I see the church parking lot and notice that there are not many cars yet. I’m a little early, so it’s no big deal for us to wait in the car until the others arrive.

Just before I pull into the parking lot, I feel something around my neck. Lisa has freed herself somehow and is set on choking me out.

“What the fuck?”

“You son of a bitch!” Her nails scratch my back as she tries to get her small hands around my throat.

“You’re trying to choke me, you little witch?” I have to park the car before dealing with her, but once I have it in park, I turn to take her on. “I told you to relax.”

She screams, “You kidnapped me!”

Fists of fury pound on my chest, and I grab her wrists when she moves her hands to scratch my face. “Uh-uh, baby. No messing up the face.”

“I’m gonna kill you, Frank!” With a crazy loud growl, she launches herself over the back of the seat and into the front, reaching for the passenger door.

“You ain’t going nowhere, sweetheart.” I grab her, holding her back so she can’t reach the door.

She struggles like a rabid animal and is hard to hold onto. “You’re not going to get away with this, Frank Vietti!”

“But I am. You should settle down, and I’ll explain things to you.”

“Like hell I will,” she says between clenched teeth. “You tied me up. You threw me into the back of your godforsaken hearse where dead people have been! That’s unforgivable!” Still trying to escape my hold on her, she manages to wiggle one hand free and starts pounding at me with her tiny fist.

“Stop fighting me, Lisa. And all the dead people who have been in this car have been in caskets. Don’t worry your pretty little head about things you don’t understand.”

“Stop talking to me like I’m some braindead idiot,” she snaps. “You know what I mean about the dead bodies. I don’t care if they were in caskets. It’s just really gross and sick. And you stole me!” she yells and hits me in the chin as she manages to free her other hand.

“Hey now, cut that shit out.” I take her by the wrists to stop her assault, and she begins flopping around like a fish out of water.

Her actions are effective, and she gets out of my grasp. Turning around, she goes for the door again. This time, I grab her by the waist and haul her with me to the back of the hearse where I can make sure she can’t get out.

Her chest heaves and her rounded cheeks are red with exertion. “Why?” she asks, looking up at me with soulful brown eyes, her plump lips pouting.

I run my hands over her shoulders, down her sides, then over her round hips, getting lost in her eyes for only a moment before pulling myself back into the reality of what’s happening.

She’s trying to soften me up is what she’s doing.

“Just be quiet,” I say and close my eyes, taking a moment.

And that’s a mistake.

She moves with the speed of a cheetah, jumping back over the seat into the front and rushing for the driver’s door. But I can move fast too. I lean over the seat, easily scooping her up and pulling her into the back once again.

“You’re not going to get away from me. You should just stop trying.”

Her eyes take on a savagery that almost makes me laugh. “I will not. You aren’t going to do whatever it is you plan to do to me. Do you hear me?”

“God, you’re cute when you’re angry.” I want to kiss her, but I’m not about to let her have something as good as what I’ve got when she’s being so aggressive.

“What?”

I find her confused expression funny, but

when I laugh, she looks like she’s about to cry, so I stop, not liking that look on her pretty face. “Hey, don’t cry.”

“You’re scaring me. I can’t fight you. And I don’t know what you want with me. I mean, you don’t want to date me, that’s for sure.”

“You’re right. I don’t want to date you.”
