She gimlet-eyed him. “An order?”

“A promise.”

After a pause, Indigo stroked a palm across his jaw. “You can’t make it so.”

He relished the warmth of her touch. “If I could?”

“You would be enormously powerful. But here’s the thing, if my people fall, I will fall beside them. I won’t live in a world of Cerberus’s making.”

“You prefer the Evermore to existence?” Dragging Indy with him, he moved to sit with his back against the headboard.

“Hell, no. But I do prefer it to an existence where humans are fodder and Aeternals are life-sucking savages.”

His gaze traveled across the face he loved. “I want you to live because where you go I shall follow. But I cannot enter the Evermore.”

He listened as her heart stuttered. “Have you been so evil you’ll beeline for Angor when you die?”

He didn’t answer. Tonight was only for truths.

Indigo threw a leg across his thighs and cradled his face with both hands. Her violet eyes stared into a soul he wasn’t sure he had possessed until he met her. “Life and death aren’t yours to decide.” Her voice was a soft breeze tickling his lips.

“They are, Indy. Tomorrow, I will not allow you to go to the Evermore.”

She locked eyes with Roark. “Tell me you won’t betray the Firebrands. Why did you give Rein Blood’s Kiss?”

“As I explained before, it’s where it belongs.”

“Not much of an answer.”

“Better to be brief.” He rested both arms behind his head, at ease despite the tricky convo.

“What about betraying the Firebrands?”

Roark fixed on Indy’s violet eyes. “I will not. Do you believe me?”

She hesitated. Finally she nodded. “I do.”

“Your faith touches me more than you realize.”

She shrugged. “Call me a good judge of character. Or call me stupid.”

“You are not stupid. You, Indy, are an unexpected gift.”

“Enough talk. More action, kinda-shifter.”

He rolled her onto her back, nestled his large body between her thighs, and nudged her with the blunt tip of his arousal. In one fast thrust, he buried himself deep. Tonight was about raw sex, a time to lose himself in the wet heat of the female who owned his blackened soul.

He had tried to distance himself. With Indy, it was impossible. Now he was stuck.

Her legs wrapped around his hips. Her nails bit into his back. His Indy needed wildness tonight as much as he did. It reminded them they were alive. Alive with passion. Alive with energy. Alive with the hope of years ahead.

He growled, pounding into her with fierce possession. “I won’t last long.” His fingers dipped between their bodies to stroke and pinch her clit, making her thrash from side to side.

Withdrawing until only the tip of his cock remained inside, he slammed back inside, pulled out, pushed in. Nothing except complete ownership of his female would do tonight.

Roark crushed her mouth, his tongue demanding, hers responding.

Her breath ragged, she drew away from his lips. “Yes. Harder, Roark.”
