She faded. Ohngel crashed to the ground, his mind locking like a vault. His memories shut down. Physical sensations receded. Ere he became nothing, his last thought was crystal clear.

The portals. The Whorl. They exist once again.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Helpless, Indigo watched Roark’s body quake, his legs jerk, and his arms flail. The energy he had shared with the coven snapped back into him, light blazing like fire beneath his skin.

She tried to touch him. He drew away, rejecting her.

Indigo cried out through their link, No. No. No. Take my hand. Her words didn’t reach him. Then an explosion threw her off her feet. When her head hit the ground, she saw darkness.

Next thing she knew, someone was shaking her.

“Auntie. Auntie,” a voice called.

Rein.

“Indigo, wake up.”

Braelyn.

She sounded worried. Indigo cracked a lid. Yep. Her nephew’s mate was staring wide-eyed.

“Stop.” Indigo clapped a palm to her forehead.

“Then get up.” The gruff voice was Rein’s.

Damn nephew.

Indigo rubbed her neck. “What?” Remembering, she snapped to a sitting position, pushing herself onto unstable feet. Rein steadied her while she eyeballed her surroundings. Roark was flat on the ground like a felled tree. No more a ball of fire. She rushed to his side, feeling for a pulse. Weak. A loud sigh of relief passed over her lips. She slumped to the dirt beside him.

Her mind reached for their connection. It was gone. She sensed only darkness, a great void.

Hell no.

He’d awake. He’d be whole. She would see to it. Her kinda-shifter who saved the world would not lie inert for a millennium.

“Rein, help him.” She sprang to her feet.

“Auntie, my healing spells are weak.” He tapped his D-chip.

Alarik ran out of a newly established portal. His eyes flitted from her to Roark. He dropped to his knees, angling his head downward toward her fallen immortal.

“You must fix my mate, brother.”

Alarik stroked her shoulder, his eyes going soft. “Your mate? This is the male you chose?”

For fear of crying, Indigo nodded.

“You, more than anyone I know, deserves happiness.” Alarik pressed both hands to Roark’s chest, snapped his lids shut, and inhaled. He remained still for some time before his arms shook. Her brother struggled to form words. “Roark is in a deep coma. His heart beats. His organs function, but inside, a black wall surrounds his mind. Though my healing enters his body, it cannot penetrate the darkness.”

“Keep trying,” said Indigo.

Alarik pushed to his feet, wobbling, his eyes sad. “Dear, I cannot get through the shield or void or whatever it is.”

“You aren’t trying hard enough.”

Her brother cleared his throat, his words raspy. “I would give you anything, but this is beyond my skills.”
