“Do you usually kidnap prospects and beat the shit out of them?”

“When necessary. You, Miller Nash, could be a valuable tool in my cause.”

“What cause?”

Cerberus cocked his head to the side, studying Miller. “The most noble. Wealth. Power. The fulfillment of desires.”

“Those are your rewards. What’s in it for me? I’m kind of a greedy chap with a penchant for bloodshed.”

“The three realms will be mine to rule when I am victorious, but my loyal followers will reap benefits.”

Okay. Crazy bloke.

“Your loyal followers are Aeternals. I’m human.”

“You won’t be once you turn,” said Cerberus.

“Turn?” Miller’s eyes traveled to each of the men in room. He leaned back in his chair, fighting to keep the pain from his expression.

“Once you gain the gifts of your warlock breed,” said Cerberus.

“What gifts are those?”

“We won’t know until it happens.” Cerberus continued, “I am aware of your history, descendant. You possess a drive for power, position, and wealth. You have no problem with violence.”

Miller winced. Such was his life in a nutshell. In the military and in British Intelligence, he’d had no qualms about killing for a cause. He concluded early he had a convenient conscience. Once he joined Custodes Templii, he climbed their ladder until he was leader of the group. His flaw was a desire for more. Always more. He rarely examined the means to the end.

“I still didn’t hear what’s in it for me.” Miller clutched his hand tighter against his ribs.

“What do you want? Think big.”

He didn’t think long. “A manor. Vast holdings. Unlimited wealth. A position of power.”

Cerberus looked pleased, deep purple eyes warming, lips atilt. “All mine to grant.”

“How do I earn these rewards?”

Lort ran a finger across a fang, red circling his pupils. “We need a plant among the Blood Coven descendants living with the Firebrands, someone who can find out how they turn on their powers.”

Cerberus rested his chin atop his locked hands. “Because you are one of them, they will share. Do I have your allegiance?”

“How do I get in with them?”

“Roark will aid in your escape. As the Boy Scouts you both are, you will ally with the Firebrands, reject Arisen Dawn, and lend your services to their noble cause.”

Roark crossed his arms over his chest. “While he infiltrates the coven, what do I do?”

“I have a special task for you. I have need of a weapon called Blood’s Kiss.”

“Why?”

“Not necessary knowledge for the task. I have searched for it through the centuries, but it evades me. Put Firebrand resources on it, find it, and steal it from beneath their noses. While you are there, kill the witch Indigo. Do it quickly before she sees the scheme in the River Am.”

Roark sniffed, seeming a bit skeptical. “They’ll never buy I’m legit.”

“Your job is to make them believe.”

Miller scrubbed a fist along his stubbled jaw.
