Roark pulled a wallet out of his back pocket. He snagged a platinum American Express card. “Unlimited.”

“I work alone.” She crossed arms over her chest, the universal sign of stubbornness.

Roark waved his credit card. “Not this time. I’ll be part of the hunt.”

“Deal breaker. You’ll cramp my style.”

“Let me remind you, Cerberus wants this sword. We do this together or I’ll seek another clever witch.” Roark shrugged, feigning less commitment than he felt.

Indigo’s gaze crawled down his body as if she’d find an answer there.

Thorn lifted a dusty cowboy boot to polish it on the back of his pantleg. “While you throw the idea around, keep on your toes, Indigo. Kole says if he strays, zap him. Dead is okay.”

She looked too pleased with this news. “I’m in.”

“Bye, guys. It’s been special. You made the deal too sweet to turn down.” Roark was eager to send his escorts on their way so he could be alone with the witch. Then he remembered. “Hey. Keep an eye on Miller Nash for me. He tends to get bad headaches.”

Dax paused. “Sure thing, dickwad. Indigo, if you find the sword, it goes to the commander. I hope before the hunt ends, the asshole requires termination with extreme prejudice. Make me happy.”

With his middle finger thrown at the vampire, Roark spun to face the alarmingly delicious Indy. “After we find your shoes, do you think you should search me for a concealed weapon?” He winked at her.

She stared at his crotch, stirring his rebellious cock until it pushed painfully against his zipper.

“It’s not very concealed,” she said.

“I know, but I still think you should pat me down.”

Her gaze slid up from his package to his eyes. “Since you may be my client, warning. I don’t mix business and…”

“Pleasure, huh? Let me guarantee, it would be.”

“Your ego is surpassed only by your wild fantasies. Now let’s go to my place at the stronghold where you can fill me in on this Blood’s Kiss. It’s been a long day.”

“I’m all yours. Don’t be gentle.”

She groaned, dismissing him with a roll of her eyes.

But he was persistent, certain he could break down her defenses. Besides, though she might have a problem mixing business and pleasure, he had none. In fact, it was soon to be his favorite combo. Big Mac and fries. Bacon and eggs. Business and pleasure with Indy.

“Let’s find your shoes first. Any idea where to start?”

She waved her hand around the room. “Everywhere. They’re sneaky. Could be in the file drawers, mini-fridge, or trashcan.”

With a grin, Roark pulled out a drawer.

Nope.

Bam. Bam. Bam.

Who would be here this late? Somebody with a big thick fist pounded on Celene’s apartment door. She yanked the toothbrush out of her mouth, Crest dribbling down her chin. “Who is it?” She peeked around the bathroom doorway while she wiped off the goo with her hand.

“Commander Nacon. Nace.”

The voice was deep. Booming. Like his knock. She had met the hot Firebrand a couple times. Though sparks ignited between them, he’d never visited.

“Give me a sec.”
