Jonquil was one of few Skyler and Kole trusted with their toddler, a precocious demon-witch mixling with a knack for getting into trouble.

Before she could race out, Ram scooped Jonquil into his arms, her feet dangling at his knees. “You’re growing up too fast.”

She pushed out of his embrace. “Oh, Daddy. Don’t get mushy.” The preteen strutted out the door, miffed at her father, her eyes rolled to the ceiling.

Ram fisted his hips while he stared at a retreating Jonquil. Denim could almost see the gears of his mind grinding. Despite his sexist bravado, his playboy smile, and his cocky attitude, he had carried guilt, finally forgiving himself for his careless youth and the death of Amelia in childbirth.

Denim sashayed over to her satyr. “Stop gathering wool. Yes, she’s growing up too fast. You can’t stop it. Yes, she’s a knock-out. Yes, boys will hit on her. You can’t stop that either. You can, however, trust her to make good decisions. You raised her that way. Now, get your tight, scrumptious ass over here. You can hug me. I like mushy.”

Ram tugged his mate close, one arm tight around her waist. “Come here, female. I want more than a squeeze from you.” His free hand rested on the swell of her breast where he tasted her soul, feeding from her, nourishing himself as satyrs did. He aroused her at the same time. A twofer.

She moaned, her head rolling from side to side, his touch an aphrodisiac, her voice a raspy whisper while she luxuriated in his power. “You’ll have to wait until you’ve wined and dined me.”

“You’re so hard on me.” Ram gripped her hand, dragging it along his chest, down his rigid abs, and to the thick bulge in his pants. “See.”

Before he could stop her, she waltzed out of his arms, twirling her skirt while spinning on high-ass heels that made her legs even longer.

“You’re beautiful.”

“Not me, cher. It’s this ol’ thing.” She twirled again. “Jonquil helped me pick it out. She said you’d love it.”

“I do because you’re in it, and I love you. I’m the luckiest male on Scath. In the world. No, make it the universe.” Ram’s translucent eyes turned neon green as horns curled from his head, both a sign of lust and hunger.

Unable or unwilling to fight Ram’s undeniable charm, Denim twisted her arms behind her to unzip. “Aw. You say the nicest things.”

“What are you doing?”

“Starting date night early.”

But it was not in the stars.

Denim glanced at her wrist. She tapped her vibrating D-chip. “Damn. Brak put out a call to off-duty Firebrands.”

From the frown on Ram’s face, he had received the same message. “Yep. Looks like we’re headed to the northern-most Bludhaven portal. Arisen Dawn insurgents may hit three spots at once. Brak is leading Bade and civilian volunteers to a Covenkirk site before he heads to North Shelters. He’s assigning us to the vampire region.”

Denim continued to slip out of her dress while she hustled toward their closet. She snagged a pair of khakis, glancing at Ram, who stood beside her donning his fighting gear. He was biting back some words. “Don’t, satyr.”

“Don’t what?” He hung his soft wool slacks on a hanger.

“Don’t tell me to stay here where it’s safe.” She jammed her feet into well-worn boots.

T-shirt in place, muscles stretching the limits of the fabric, expression grim, Ram twisted toward her. “I confess. A part of me wants you here where it’s safe. I couldn’t bear to lose you, Denim. But a bigger part wants you beside me. You’re a warrior. I love that about you. I love that you have my six while I have yours.” He tied off his gorgeous hair with a leather band.

“You do?”

“I do.” He yanked her in for a hard kiss. “Now let’s go kick Arisen Dawn ass.” Ram handed Denim her sheath with two Eickhorn KM2000 blades already holstered.

She accepted the weapons, fighting back a tear. She loved this man who had given her a family and respect. When they returned from the mission, he was getting enough sex to keep him sated for a long time.

Yes, he was.

Chapter Fourteen

Brak could hardly contain his excitement. Kole had trusted him to organize a mission. It was enough to make a young carnal demon pound his chest with pride.

The commander identified three possible incursion sites. With the Firebrands spread thin, Brak called in off-duty warriors, assigning Ram and Denim to the Bludhaven problem area. He felt bad about interrupting their time off, but it was what it was.

He posted the vampire recruit Bade along with two volunteer civilian refugees behind the cover of a few trees at a small rural Covenkirk portal. “Your job is to watch and report strange behavior to me. Do not engage.”
