She lifted her brows. “Yes.”

“Indy.”

She fluttered a dismissive hand. “Kole, Roark didn’t know I was listening.”

“You don’t say.” The commander glanced up before he shouted out the door. “Bounty, where’s the file on yesterday’s portal activity?”

His executive assistant’s smooth voice floated in from the other office. “Bottom right corner of your desk, probably under your elbow. Or you could try something crazy like looking in the documents folder on your computer.”

Kole’s big-breasted secretary was no pushover. Despite soft golden hair, a body built for bed, and a smile which would harden any guy’s cock, the vampire didn’t cower before her demon boss. Roark was impressed. Yet she held no interest for him. Hell no. His stupid dick wanted the angry witch.

“Here it is.” Kole snagged a file right where Bounty had told him to look. He opened it. “You two keep ironing this out. Ignore me.”

Roark raised his voice. “The fucking door was open. Don’t you think I would have closed it if the call was a secret?”

“I’m not sure you’re that bright.”

“I’m not when I’m around you,” he muttered, grinding his teeth.

She flipped a strand of errant hair behind her ear. “What? Speak louder. Anyway, I don’t trust you.”

Though he had given Indy no reason to trust him, it pissed him off when she hadn’t given him the benefit of the doubt. Roark scooped a hand through his hair. His feelings made no sense.

Frustrating witch.

“You two chat for a few. I’ve got a call to make.” Kole picked up his landline, punching in a number.

While the commander took care of business, Roark tried to soothe Indy by caressing her arm.

Wrong move.

She swatted him away, berating him in angry whispers, kind enough not to disturb the commander’s conversation. Roark slouched further into his chair, stretching out his legs and folding his arms across his chest.

Kole disconnected from his call, tapping his sparking fingers together before flipping through the folder on his desk again. “I’d like you to stay with the job, Indigo.”

“Me, too,” said Roark. “You can snuggle up to the phone during all future conversations with Lort or Cerberus. Once I disconnect, you can ask all the questions you want.”

“Thanks ever so much.” Indy’s upper lip curled into a snarl.

Kole slammed the folder shut. “See. Everything is good. Okay, kids. Kiss and make up. Then get the hell out of my office and do your job. If Cerberus wants the fucking sword, so do we. Get it. Indigo, trust is never easily earned. Nor should it be. But cut the mutherfucker some slack.”

“What? What do you mean?” Her foot started the tap-tap-tap thing again.

“Who the hell knows. Now scat.”

“You must have a reason. Do you mind sharing it?” asked Indigo.

“Yes, I do. Roark, you need to dig deep, son. Be honest. Be sincere. I know that helps me win Skyler to my side in an argument. I’ve gotten so good at it, I’m the fucking poster boy for a goddamn touchy-feelie asshole.”

“You have a way with words, Kole. Your sound advice warms me.” Roark swung his feet to the floor.

“I’m inspirational. Honesty, shifter. She deserves it.”

Roark took Indy’s elbow to escort her out of the room, but she jerked loose. “What the hell does he mean?”

If purple eyes could burn, she would have scorched Roark’s heart. “I’ll explain. Let’s portal to the hotel in Alexandria.”
