“The green growing kind?”

“Funny.” His hot hand stroked her leg, rucking her skirt to her knees. “No. I joined Arisen Dawn to be Cadmon’s snitch.”

Her brows scrunched together. When his admission sank in, she raised herself, punching his arm hard. “You asshole. Why didn’t you tell me? You let me think you were the enemy.”

“Ouch. I told you I was on your side.” His hot palm continued its journey up her leg, stroking the skin of her inner thigh.

“You did, and you didn’t.” She shook her head. Unbelievable. “Like your word is proof?”

“I wouldn’t be useful to the Firebrands if I blabbed how I was a spy in Cerberus’s camp.”

“Are you saying I have loose lips?”

His expression softened. “You have gorgeous lips. Unexpectedly kissable lips. In fact, everything about you is unexpected. But, Indy, I have enough baggage to fill an eight-wheeling cross-country moving truck. Don’t consider me a permanent fixture after we do this thing. Honesty.”

“I have my own heavy luggage, and I certainly don’t intend to be tied to a smooth-talking, shifty shifter. Most importantly, just what thing do you think we’re gonna do?”

“I don’t think it. I know it. We’re gonna fuck.” Straddling her thighs, he propped his fists on each side of her, dipped his head, and brushed his mouth across hers, his tongue flicking out to stroke the seam.

She pressed against his massive shoulders.

A dark, roiling storm gathered behind his crystal-gray eyes, but he pulled back. “Damn. Stop resisting. No more barriers. No more bantering teases. You need to let off steam as much as I do.”

Before he could kiss her again, Indigo ducked under his arm and slipped out of bed.

Her ragged breath pumped in and out while she braced herself against the wall. She needed space from the kinda-shifter. He was a distraction she couldn’t afford. Didn’t want.

Lie.

Roark’s thigh muscles tightened. He rose from the bed, stalking her, caging her with his body, crushing his chest against her breasts. “You ran to Kole without even giving me time to explain. I’ve never hurt you. I’ve never threatened you. I think you owed me more than a stab in the back.”

She’d hightailed it to Kole because Roark was shifty. And likely powerful enough to have stopped her from tattling. But beneath his anger, she saw a momentary flash of … hurt? No. Too strong. Vulnerability, maybe. Her defenses shattered. “Okay. I was possibly wrong. I’m sorry. I should have let you explain.”

His fingers caressed the flesh of her abdomen. They dipped beneath her T-shirt, sliding it and her bra up over her breast, cupping it. He pinched her nipple hard enough to make her wince. Bending forward, he drew it into his mouth, sucking on it until the ache became pleasure. He drew away. “How sorry?”

“Very.” She gasped.

“Cheap words. Show me.”

What the hell. I need to get him out from under my skin.

Though she didn’t respond well to orders, she wanted Roark. Or maybe she wanted to shock him. After debating for mere seconds, she pushed against his chest to back him away, giving herself space. Curling one hand onto his hip, she fell to her knees.

He growled. “Unbraid your hair before the apology.”

Indigo fanned out her curly tresses until they dragged behind her on the carpet.

Roark groaned, his fingers tangling in them.

She slid his zipper down. A taste to get him out of her system. When he popped free, she angled her neck to gaze into his eyes. “You’re really big, but I knew that from the river. Still, this is IMAX, front row stuff.”

“Hmm. Less chatter. You were about to show me and my big dick how sorry you are. Get on with it.”

The shifter was cocky. In the best way possible.

Indigo tugged Roark’s pants lower, fisting his long, thick arousal at the base. She licked the crown like a popsicle.

Roark’s breath hitched, his head falling back. “Yes, Indy.”
