His caress turned into a light tap. Then harder slaps.

Damn. That smarts.

“I love you, Roark.” For some reason, she wanted to confess. She didn’t think she said the words aloud. At least, not loud enough to be heard.

“What, Indy? What’d you say? Talk to me.”

Again with the hitting. I’m going to knock him on his ass after I nap a little.

She tried to move her lips, but they were so fucking stiff. “I … I…”

It seemed as if she had been in the dark for a while, but when Indigo finally dragged her eyes open, the insides of her lids were like forty-grit sandpaper. She blinked a couple times, trying to remember something. Anything. Where was she? In bed. In the hotel room? What had happened?

Roark sat beside her, his head down. He was tres serious. His hand was pressing the upper swell of her breast. What was he doing? Feeling her up while she slept?

No.

She’d been shot.

When she attempted to sit, Roark pushed her down, all the while keeping pressure on her wound. “Stay put, Indy.”

She was too weak to fight him.

When he finally removed his paw, he grinned, the cocky smile which turned her muscles to Jell-O.

“You had me scared.” Roark leaned over to brush his lips across hers. Hmm. Warm, full, irresistible.

When she grabbed his shoulders to deepen the kiss, he clasped her wrists. “No. You nearly died.”

She looked at her chest to see an angry red jagged star. A closed wound. She touched it. It was still sore. “I heal fast, but not that fast. It was you.”

“I may have done a few things.”

“Shifters can’t mend wounds.”

He tapped a forefinger on his chest. “Mixed breed, remember.”

“Yeah, I do. Still not normal. Who shot me?”

“Warlock assassin. Probably worked for Cerberus.”

“He used a gun. I had him before he played cowboy. What kind of an Aeternal uses a gun?”

“That’s your big concern?”

“Sure. I worry about the direction our society is taking. A lack of values. No appreciation for how things are done. No respect for history. No respect for their breed skills.”

“Instead of such deep thoughts, you might just want to thank me for saving your butt.”

She sat, scooting until she braced herself against the headboard. With Roark’s eyes feasting on her boobs, she did the modesty thing by drawing the sheet to her chin. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I’m sorry I lost the ruby. We’ll have to bring Celene in again to get the scabbard. I’m going to have to grovel to Nace.”

“Indy, you have nothing to be sorry about. I should have known those guys were there.”

“You weren’t angry because I lost the ruby?”
