“Is bitchalicous there?”

“Yes. You know I don’t like it when you call her that.” His exasperated censure came through the phone.

“She hurt the two males I care about most. But I don’t want to fuss.”

“Why did you phone, dear?”

“Remember when you were young and we played games together?”

“Like poker? Sure. You always cheated.” She could almost hear her brother smile.

Indigo chuckled. “I did, but you were such a clever boy. I had to squash your ego to build your character.”

Alarik exhaled into the phone while she paused before speaking again. “Did you have a good childhood?”

“Don’t you recall? You were there.” More deep breathing. “I had a great childhood.”

“Was I too crazy?”

His voice was raspy with emotion. “You’re not crazy. You’re quirky. Isn’t that what you always tell me?”

“Hmm. Good to know you listened.”

“Sister, I missed nothing as a child. You gave me everything. Fun. Safety. A home. Food. Unconditional love.”

Her breath hitched. “But other young had parents. They had rules.”

His voice softened. “You were my parent. Besides, what did you tell me about rules? Yes, I remember. They are for those without imagination. You laid out two principles, refusing to call them rules. ‘Work hard. Be kind.’ I have not always succeeded, but I have tried.”

Alarik paused. “It couldn’t have been easy to raise a mix-breed bastard. I’ve never thanked you. Thank you.”

Indigo sniffled. “Pshaw. It was nothing. Good night. Now shuffle off to join the vampiress from hell.”

Alarik laughed as he disconnected.

Indigo sensed his presence before she heard him clear his throat. His back was against the doorjamb, water droplets clinging to his broad, muscled chest, a towel wrapped loosely around his hips.

“Eavesdropping, Roark?”

“Yep. You are a remarkable female, Indy.”

“I thought you had an errand to run.”

“Already done.”

“Did you venture out clad only in terrycloth? You must have caused a stir?”

“Nope. I completed my chore and returned to take another shower. More blood to wash off. I did bring you a present, though.” He strode into the bedroom, the air suddenly heavy with lust.

Damn.

The male was an addiction, secrets or no. She may or may not love him, but she sure got a bad case of the hots whenever he was near.

Roark set the ruby on the bedside table.

“How…?”

“By being greatly pissed off and showing no mercy. Nobody tries to kill you and lives. Enough talk.”
